Yearly Roundup: 2013

Another full year of game collecting has come to a close. While I don’t think 2013 stacked up as much as 2012 (in terms of amount of games added), 2013 still gave me dozens of great new games to play and cherish. I picked up a brand new console in 2013 with the Wii U, and even managed to snag a few new Sega Saturn and original Xbox games as well. This was also a strong year for downloadable games for me, especially for review on the 3DS, so a lot of games I’d have loved to own I only have in digital form. Sad, but not the worst thing that could happen. Without further adieu, here are the games of 2013:

Sunday Roundup: 11/24/13 – The Wii U Edition

It finally happened:

I bought a Wii U!!

And with some pretty great deals surrounding it: I was able to score the Legend of Zelda Special Edition system for nearly $75 off, as well as snag some cheap, brand new games!

And what could make this week even more awesome? Getting a trio of Saturn games off eBay, of course!! Winners all around!! More exclamation points!!! (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 10/13/13

A scheduling conflict prevented me last week from posting my new games added to my collection. This week however I had no excuse to miss the weekly reporting so I present to you essentially two weeks of games thrown into one! And, for a little extra kick, there’s even a single game I received three weeks prior that I’m writing about just for good measure. Huzzah!

Worth Playing vol. 6: The Brawler Bunch

Brawlers, beat-em ups, side-scrollers (to an extent), and just plain arcade. Whatever you label the genre one thing is for sure: there are a ton of them out there!

Since I started playing video games on the NES there have been side-scrolling beat-em ups. My beginnings were with the Double Dragon series on the NES, which then evolved into the Genesis classics Golden Axe I and II. The love affair took off from there, with every generation producing unique and worthwhile entries in the genre. Though there has been a decline with the recent consoles, a spare brawler rises out of the ashes of nostalgia and captures my heart all over again. The following games aren’t in any sort of order. They’re all just games that are entirely worth your time.

Sunday Roundup: 5/5/13

Rather than give you the full intro for the Sunday Roundup, I’m going to direct you to an article I wrote a while back about Goodwill. I’ve spoken at length about Goodwill and thrift shops being a game hunters friend. I’ve reminisced about how I found rare games or totally insane deals while sifting through the racks, and I’ve always accented these stories with the one or two exceptional finds I’ve found (i.e. Diablo on PS1). Well, I’m tacking on another title to that list this week!

Mario and Donkey Kong’s Decades Long Battle

Mario and Donkey Kong.
Two names synonomous with video games that have been around since before many gamers can even remember. Whether it’s Donkey Kong running through a jungle, Mario jumping over barrels, or the two of them racing go-karts, the Nintendo mascots have been locked in competition since the beginning of the Japanese game company’s storied history.
Since the release of 1981’s arcade classic title Donkey Kong, an oversized gorilla and an Italian plumber have been going at it for decades. Let’s take a look back at each and every video game featuring the duo going head-to-head. (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 4/7/13

Well folks, this is it. My very last Sunday Roundup whilst living in the wonderful state of Indiana. This coming Friday I’ll be making my move across the country to live in sunny California! Seeing as this week was the last full week I’d be in the Hoosier state, I decided to take it upon myself to go out with a bang. Well, at least in the video game collecting department. Rather than himming and hawing over a few dollars for a game, if I saw a game I wanted I just bought it. There aren’t too many great stores in the area I’m moving to in Cali, so I decided to take advantage of the wonderful selection I have here in Indiana one more time. So let’s get this thing started, shall we?

Yearly Roundup: 2012

Another year draws to a close and 2013 is right in front of us. What better way to look back on the year that was 2012 than reliving each and every game purchase of the year! You may recall last year I did something very similar at the end of the year, but this time around it’s a bit more special. 2012 was Slick Gaming’s first full calendar year being a live blog (a feat I still can’t grasp entirely). That means a lot of things, like more posts and features than before, but it also means an entire year’s worth of new games chronicled in the Sunday Roundup feature.
