The greatest handheld Nintendo has made? Possibly… all things DS are here

Worth Playing vol. 4: The Compilation Compendium

What can be better than owning a ton of video games?

Owning a one video game that has a TON of video games all packed in to one disc!

The game compilation is an ideal way for publishers to re-release games and have gamers pay for them all over again, but it is also a great way for gamers to experience titles they may have missed or otherwise skipped over from years past. While some packages are just thrown together without any thought, others are done well and are deserving of your dollar. Here is my list of video game compilations that are very much worth checking out.

Film Review: Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva

There’s something about Professor Layton and his apprentice number one Luke that has captivated me through three complete DS games. Needless to say I can’t get enough of the British accents, puzzle solving madness, and mysterious antics the duo get themselves into. Enter Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, an anime film based on the DS series of video games. After arriving in my mailbox via Netflix I was giddy like a child on Christmas morning waiting to get some free time to watch it. And though the movie is based on a puzzle solving video game, Eternal Diva does a fantastic job capturing the look, feel, and charm the DS games have become known for. (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 4/1/12

You never know what you’re gonna find when you go into a dollar store. Sometimes you’ll find super cheap toys, other times you’ll find semi-stale candy that you hadn’t seen in years. Or sometimes you’ll find amazing NEW games for just $5!

Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

What’s that? Another tragedy has befallen Japan and demons are at the center of it all? Hmm, must be another Shin Megami Tensei game. Devil Survivor 2 is the follow-up to the RPG/strategy hybrid Devil Survivor (which saw a recent remake on the 3DS), and it has you once again controlling a group of young heroes as they unravel the mysteries surrounding the most recent trip Earth has taken to its ultimate destruction. I know it’s terrible that the world is in shambles, but if mass destruction is this much fun, count me in, baby!

Sunday Roundup: 3/11/12

I’ve been busy traveling around and enjoying my time at the Mall of America with some of my friends from college, so I’ve been away from the computer and thus away from this blog for some time. Fortunately, a big new city means a handful of new game stores to hit up. I was able to find a few good titles that I’ve added to my collection. Here they are for your viewing pleasure.

Top Ten Unexplained Themes in RPGs

Why do people just stand still, looking solemnly into your eyes with a cold gaze of death?
Or how about explaining why sleeping outside on the ground can miraculously heal any and all wounds, no matter the severity?
And what about no one seeming to care that there are people carrying around weapons and ammunition to initiate a small war at any given second?

These are the questions that are never asked when playing a Role-Playing Game, yet they are always there in the back of your head, eating away at your thoughts long after the console has been turned off. Most of these issues are just components of the RPG itself, but some of them simply don’t make any damn sense. Here are ten unexplained, bizarre, and truly peculiar themes in RPGs.

Worth Playing vol. 3: Puzzle Game Madness

I did it for one of my favorite genres (the fighter) and I’ve got to do it for another genre close to my heart, the puzzle game. Whether you’re connecting colored gems, filling in gaps, solving brain teaser, or shooting shiny balls at other shiny balls, the puzzle game is a staple to the video game community that isn’t going anywhere. And with so many excellent games to sink your teeth into it can be hard to determine which games offer the best challenge, the most addictive gameplay, and the most satisfaction upon completion. Vol 3 of Worth Playing is here, so let’s get this underway.

Sunday Roundup: 1/29/12

Another visit to Lafayette and another trip into Disc Replay. What that all boils down to is me finding new excuses to throw my money away. Personally it’s always a small victory every time I get to buy a new old game: I feel like I’m doing the game a personal favor by freeing it from the confines of the store rack. Also, there were some great deals at Best Buy this week: Lots of new game for just about every console were on clearance. And to make things better, I felt even more victorious this week since I wasn’t able to get any new titles the previous week! Huzzah!

Review: Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

I’m going to make a bold claim here:

Layton and Luke are among the greatest duos in gaming history.

I’m serious, they’re up there with the likes of Mario & Luigi, Link & Zelda, Jak & Daxter, the list goes on. The third in the series, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future gives us the first hefty amount of back story. What it also gives us is the most action filled adventure yet, some of the trickiest and most clever puzzles the series has seen, and the same caliber of excellence seen in the two previous entries.
