Mario and Donkey Kong.
Two names synonomous with video games that have been around since before many gamers can even remember. Whether it’s Donkey Kong running through a jungle, Mario jumping over barrels, or the two of them racing go-karts, the Nintendo mascots have been locked in competition since the beginning of the Japanese game company’s storied history.
Since the release of 1981’s arcade classic title Donkey Kong, an oversized gorilla and an Italian plumber have been going at it for decades. Let’s take a look back at each and every video game featuring the duo going head-to-head. (more…)
Well folks, this is it. My very last Sunday Roundup whilst living in the wonderful state of Indiana. This coming Friday I’ll be making my move across the country to live in sunny California! Seeing as this week was the last full week I’d be in the Hoosier state, I decided to take it upon myself to go out with a bang. Well, at least in the video game collecting department. Rather than himming and hawing over a few dollars for a game, if I saw a game I wanted I just bought it. There aren’t too many great stores in the area I’m moving to in Cali, so I decided to take advantage of the wonderful selection I have here in Indiana one more time. So let’s get this thing started, shall we?

The remake.
It’s been around for years and it has become more common for a developer or publisher to remake or re-release their titles for a new generation to play and enjoy. Many of these games are vanilla ports of their original versions but there are a few that I can say are better than their originals. Needless to say these games are worth your time and will leave you feeling both excited and nostalgic.

There’s always video games on my Christmas list. Ever since I can remember I’ve always asked for a game (usually more than one) for Christmas. Year after year I am always delighted and truly grateful each time I pick up a package that’s in the shape of a game and wonder what it could be. Like a kid with any new toy, after I open up each present all I can think about is how fun it’s going to be to actually play with my new gift. This past week I’ve been lucky enough to not only have some time off work, but also extra free time to sit down and play several of these games already. Another year draws to a close and 2013 is right in front of us. What better way to look back on the year that was 2012 than reliving each and every game purchase of the year! You may recall last year I did something very similar at the end of the year, but this time around it’s a bit more special. 2012 was Slick Gaming’s first full calendar year being a live blog (a feat I still can’t grasp entirely). That means a lot of things, like more posts and features than before, but it also means an entire year’s worth of new games chronicled in the Sunday Roundup feature. The concept is simple: you’re given a row of cubes that seemingly form a simple shape. But etch away specific cubes and you start to reveal a hidden picture. That’s it. That’s the entire setup for Picross 3D, a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS released in 2010. With the perfect blend of easy and difficult, fun and challenging, and simply addictive nature, Picross 3D is one of the best puzzle games on the DS, and one of the best puzzle games to come out this side of Tetris.

Just in time for the fifth game in the series, and nearly one year after its initial release, Professor Layton’s first adventure, and last on the DS, has once again proved to me that puzzle games and English accents should always go hand-in-hand. Professor Layton and the Last Specter is the first in a prequel trilogy detailing the eponymous archeologist’s first meeting of series favorite Luke, as well as newcomer Emmy and another adventure full of mystery, puzzles, and tons of diversions to keep you entertained after the curtain has closed. Though I didn’t find it as entertaining as previous romps, The Last Specter is a solid title that is one of the best puzzle games on the aging system. (more…)
I have a small confession to make: this is a culmination of two weeks worth of games. I was unable to get my Sunday Roundup done last week on time, and as you’ll see I had plenty of games to put together a solid week’s worth of titles for you all. But one thing lead to another and I wasn’t able to publish my weekly article. But fear not! The Sunday Roundup has not gone away, and it is back, better than ever. Or at least it’s back. Being better is totally subjective.

Two new games that couldn’t be any different. The violent homage to every iconic game imaginable and the return of my favorite gaming duo all in one week! Trying to partition time between the two games is proving quite the daunting task, but don’t feel pity for me. In fact, you should feel the opposite, because each game is great in their respective right. If you don’t believe me, then you should probably keep reading and let me change your mind. (more…)
