E3 2013 Day 2 Recap

E3 2013 Logo Day 2Nintendo held their “Press Conference” for E3 this year via a new Nintendo Direct video. Though it lacked the on-stage flair many E3 press conferences ooze, it still provided us with plenty of new games and announcements, with the top of the list being news about the next Super Smash Bros. title. Today was technically the first day of the actual expo, so we were also given a lot of hands-on impressions and demos, as well as some new gameplay trailers and info on both games and systems.

This year was no exception, with handfuls of huge announcements, not the least of which concerning the newest video game consoles, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. Review: Anomaly 2

Anomaly 2 TitleIt was only two years ago that we were first shown just how fun a reverse tower-defense game could be with the release of Anomaly: Warzone Earth. Building mobile units to travel through a battlefield destroying powerful alien structures instead of defending stationary towers was a novel idea that gave the tower-defense genre a new layer of gameplay. With the release of Anomaly 2, 11 bit studios expands upon the “tower-offense” idea of the first game by adding a new transformation ability to the mix as well as a brand new storyline and deployable units to experience. Sunday Roundup: 5/5/13

New Games (5-5-13)Rather than give you the full intro for the Sunday Roundup, I’m going to direct you to an article I wrote a while back about Goodwill. I’ve spoken at length about Goodwill and thrift shops being a game hunters friend. I’ve reminisced about how I found rare games or totally insane deals while sifting through the racks, and I’ve always accented these stories with the one or two exceptional finds I’ve found (i.e. Diablo on PS1). Well, I’m tacking on another title to that list this week!

Review: Street Fighter X Mega Man

Street Fighter X Mega Man ArtAfter a quarter century of Street Fighter and Mega Man games, Capcom has finally combined its two flagship franchises in a fan-made downloadable PC game, Street Fighter x Mega Man. Borrowing elements from each cherished and respected franchise, SFxMM is perhaps the most unique entry into either series’ storied history. Serving as the official 25th anniversary celebration for both franchises, SFxMM delivers exactly what it sets out to do: pay homage to the last 25 years of Capcom’s biggest franchises and please the fans. Yearly Roundup: 2012

New Games (8-26-12)Another year draws to a close and 2013 is right in front of us. What better way to look back on the year that was 2012 than reliving each and every game purchase of the year! You may recall last year I did something very similar at the end of the year, but this time around it’s a bit more special. 2012 was Slick Gaming’s first full calendar year being a live blog (a feat I still can’t grasp entirely). That means a lot of things, like more posts and features than before, but it also means an entire year’s worth of new games chronicled in the Sunday Roundup feature. Let’s start out in January and take a look back at the year in games! (more…)

Review: Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition CoverWhen Baldur’s Gate first released on the PC back in 1998, BioWare had created one of the most beloved and recognizable games to bear the Dungeons & Dragons license, as well as one of the most finely crafted RPG experiences to date.

Fast forward nearly 14 years to the day and we are given Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, a reworked version of the game that hammers out a multitude of bugs found in the original release, as well as introduces brand new characters, storylines, and modes to play through. But for all the accolades it received in the late 90s, how well does the once mighty Baldur’s Gate stand up to RPG juggernauts like Dragon Age: Origins in today’s gaming world? (more…)

Review: Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy

Nothing ruins your day more than an evil overlord kidnapping your nation’s princess and threatening the utter destruction of your land in just a few moments. And what if you don’t have the time to get out there and rescue her, uncover the ultimate weapons needed to slay a massive beast guarding the entrance to the evil bosses lair, and knock out the evil overlord for good? If that’s the case then you’ll be happy to know you can do all of that in less than one minute in Half-Minute Hero: Super Mega Neo Climax Ultimate Boy on PC. (more…)

Review: Retro City Rampage

What started out as a side project has turned into one of the biggest trips down memory lane for anyone who grew up in the 80s or 90s. Retro City Rampage pays homage to countless movies, TV shows, and video games from decades past, all wrapped up in an 8-bit package. The nostalgic setting and pop culture humor though make Retro City Rampage a game for a specific type of player.

Now Playing: Retro City Rampage & Professor Layton and the Last Specter

Two new games that couldn’t be any different. The violent homage to every iconic game imaginable and the return of my favorite gaming duo all in one week! Trying to partition time between the two games is proving quite the daunting task, but don’t feel pity for me. In fact, you should feel the opposite, because each game is great in their respective right. If you don’t believe me, then you should probably keep reading and let me change your mind. (more…)
