PS2 news, reviews, and fun stuff
I have been wanting to play Brotherhood of Steel for ages. I can’t even tell you how excited I was to finally sit down and play this sucker. Perhaps I should have just left my experience with the game as an imagination, because what I played was a mediocre action RPG set (sort of) in the Fallout universe. At least it has co-op, right?
Once you feel the groove it’s hard to stop. As is the case with my recent reintroduction to the Dance Dance Revolution series. My previous Modern Classics entry was on the first PS2 DDR game, DDRMAX. The newest entry is none other than the sequel DDRMAX2. With more music, more step patterns, more modes, and more ways to get your groove on, MAX2 is one of the greatest games in the entire series. Too bad then that it was the last game that got it all right.
After months of having things to do on the weekend and/or during the week, I’m finally back to what you could call a normal week: I didn’t have anything to do this week except work and, well, work! Normal is a relative term though, because I’d much rather have plans or places to go like I had before. This work and no play stuff is boring. Not only that but I buy less games when I don’t go places! Oh well, at least Goodwill was good to me this week.
Games, games, and more games!
I said last time that I couldn’t recall any other instance where I came into possession of more games in one week, but it would appear I have outdone myself already. This week I found games from all over the place, and received a few at excellent prices from a friend looking to get rid of them! And this marks the first time where I’ve ever purchased video games from a convention (Gen Con Indy, to be exact), and that is something I’m definitely going to look into more. This might be a record, folks. I don’t think I’ve every purchased this many games in one week. Not only that, but several of these games are highlights. Some are special because they are near and dear to my heart, some are special because they are hard to find gems, and some still are special because I was able to score them for a ridiculously good price. And I bought some crappy games for good measure. Come on, you didn’t think I’d leave you with your mouth hanging open with every game I bought, did you?
It’s been a long time since I created the Modern Classics library, and I’ve completely neglected it over these pasts months. With that in mind I set out to reinvent the series, and I wanted to start with a game that easily fit into the Modern Classic criteria:
It has to be a fun, new, innovative, or personal favorite of myself and gamers;
Leaving behind a legacy for the video game world to remember is a plus, and;
There has to be something here that I can teach you about the game.
And what did I come up with? Dance Dance Revolution. And very quickly, actually.
Free Play is a new series I’ve begun that takes a game and determines whether or not the game is worth your time. Each episode will spotlight one game on any system and in any genre. I’ll analyze the title, looking at the good parts and bad parts about it and judging if the game is worth it to play further. Best part for me, not only does this give me an exciting new feature to rant about, but it also lets me dig through my ever-growing catalog of games!

Pawn shops are good places to look for games.
There has been a pawn shop in my hometown for years, and I have never managed to venture inside it until last week (Wednesday, to be precise). And I found that not only did they have a healthy selection of vintage coins and jewelry, but also a nice selection of video games. And you know what, most of them were marked at very fair and reasonable prices!
1000.
And then some more for good measure.
As stated last week, I was just one game away from making it to 1000 games in my ever-expanding collection of games-I-hope-to-play-someday-but-will-likely-never-get-around-to-playing. Well this week that milestone was finally, after 10 years of collecting, achieved. And here they are…
I’m so close. So close to my 1000th game. Actually, I couldn’t be any closer: this week I acquired 11 new titles, and that eleventh title was my 999th overall.
I was out shopping with my girlfriend in Indianapolis and found most of these titles. Sure, there were plenty of games that I wanted to grab as well as the ones I did, but something was holding me back. Some sort of feeling that my 1000th has to be something special. Regardless, I should be receiving a new title to review this week as well, making that my 1000th. Time will tell, but for now, here’s this week’s haul.
