You can’t be as venerable as the Final Fantasy series without spawning a few spinoffs. Usually the spinoff is a chance to use some of the same mechanics as the core series but make something drastically different: perhaps a totally different battle system, completely different approach to story, and sometimes just a celebration of the many years of success the source series has entertained. Regardless of the influence, there have been dozens of spinoffs and pseudo-sequels for Final Fantasy games, and none more awesome than the ten below.

As the soon-to-be-classic RPG Bravely Default is out now on the Nintendo 3DS, myself and a lot of other RPG fans have been talking about the Final Fantasy series. It seems the one-time king of the JRPG has come a long way from the first game on the NES back in 1987: gone are the White Mages and Fighters from the early days, and in their place are MMORPGs and strangely named sequels like Final Fantasy XIII-2. But as Bravely Default has reminded us, there are a lot of great moments to hold on to and cherish in the Final Fantasy series. So, seeing as Final Fantasy is the topic of the time, I have been thinking a good deal about what my favorite FF games are. Having played most all of them, but notably not the newer games, I actually had a difficult time narrowing down the list to just ten. (more…)
For the second year in a row I was fortunate (lucky?) enough to attend the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas! Brimming with the latest technology, gadgets, innovations, and plenty of robots, CES was great every way you look at it. Though certainly not the biggest draw to the event but easily the biggest reason I was excited to attend were video games. While nothing mind blowing was shown (unless you want to count Sony’s PlayStation Now feature), there were some cool toys to play around with. (more…)
With all the talk recently about Keiji Inafune’s hugely successful Kickstarter for Might No. 9, I have been doing a lot of recollecting about Mega Man. The Blue Bomber has always had a very special place in my heart, as many of you will already know should you follow this blog or listen to the Recurring Bosscast. I’ve played most all of the classic Mega Man games and was naturally more than excited when this spiritual successor by the original creator turned up on Kickstarter. All the thinking about Mega Man and his storied past got me on a mental spree about which were my favorite Robot Masters. With dozens to choose from, narrowing down the list to just ten was certainly not easy. Riding on the coattails of Scrooge McDuck and the HD remake of the NES classic DuckTales, I’ve been reminiscing about a lot of games from my childhood. And while yesteryear is strangely something I think about far more than a normal person should, this time I was beginning to wonder what some of my other favorite titles growing up would look like in glorious high definition. Though it’s strictly speculation and quite literally most of these will never be possible, it was fun to think of what could be. What should be, perhaps? But nonetheless, here are the top ten games that need HD remakes! (more…)
Well this was unexpected... Last week, Tuesday July 23rd to be exact, marked the two year anniversary of Slick Gaming. It wasn't unexpected in that I didn't think I'd make…
I'm proud to announce that A World of Games, my Tumblr blog featuring photos and videos of all the arcades I visit, has been completely redone! A new theme, tons…
The 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo is right around the corner, and what better way to get hyped up for the event than by speculating what the conference might have to offer? I did a list like this last year and came away with almost one correct prediction, so maybe this year will be more realistic (though I highly doubt it). Even so, getting just one of these to be true would be fantastic and would totally make my E3. One can hope… (more…)
