Thoughts, questions, the truly non-categorical entities.
I’m not going to lie to you: I’ve been neglecting this blog for a few weeks now. It’s not for lack of content: I’ve had plenty to write about. As a matter of fact, a handful of game reviews went up in the past week, which is nice. But in terms of original content, I’ve had little more than my weekly releases of Sunday Roundups and Gaming News’. So I’ve decided to take this time to let you in on a little secret: I’ve been working a lot on other projects. I’ve also been just plain working too, which saps my energy most days, but I give you my work that Slick Gaming is not gone, and here’s why. (more…)
Wow. It's been one year since I started this blog. One whole year! It took me years to even begin writing one, and now we're already one whole year into…
Hats.
Is there any better way to give your character instant flair and attitude than a hat? Lots of characters wear them, some even using them as weapons or to grant special powers, but who wears them best? Whether it be baseball caps, trucker hats, or the ever-so-sophisticated top hat, these game characters all have one thing in common: their choice of headwear is almost as iconic as the character’s themselves. With E3 just one week away, the industry is buzzing with predictions, announcements, and generally what to expect from this years expo. There will be games, there will be game announcements, and there will be plenty of stuff we didn’t see coming. But will anything be as epic as I am hoping them to be? Here is my top ten list of E3 2012 announcements that I wish were coming true.

What did this week bring us in gaming news? Japan is getting some awesome 3DS games that look amazing, G4 loses its most notable personality, Nintendo says they’re giving Kirby a 20th birthday extravaganza, and there’s a Kinect game coming out that combines rhythm games with basketball dribbling.
And if that’s not enough for you, there’s also a blog out there with incredibly original Pokemon artwork.

So what happened this week? A new God of War game was announced, which is itself a huge deal, but a few release dates were given out as well that have me equally giddy.

Mega Man: Let the Games Begin collects the first four volumes of the Archie Comics periodical Mega Man comics. There are many differences between this series and the manga series also starring the Blue Bomber, but both have their endearing qualities. After months of searching I’ve finally found this trade paperback edition of the series and am going to totally spoil the entire series for you all. But you know what? It’s totally awesome even if you already know what’s going to happen.

Castlevania: You love killing all demonic creatures and have a thing for whips.

Left 4 Dead: You think zombies are alright and welcome the apocalypse if it means you can blast the living dead to pieces with a shotgun.

There’s something about Professor Layton and his apprentice number one Luke that has captivated me through three complete DS games. Needless to say I can’t get enough of the British accents, puzzle solving madness, and mysterious antics the duo get themselves into. Enter Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, an anime film based on the DS series of video games. After arriving in my mailbox via Netflix I was giddy like a child on Christmas morning waiting to get some free time to watch it. And though the movie is based on a puzzle solving video game, Eternal Diva does a fantastic job capturing the look, feel, and charm the DS games have become known for. (more…)
I’ve got an experiment for you. Try and find me any gamer that doesn’t have at least one strong memory about the soundtrack of a game. You can’t do it. As endearing as the story in many a Final Fantasy, or the excellent gameplay of titles like Uncharted 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3, music in games has left an undeniable impact on gamers. Whether it’s the blips and bleeps of the Atari 2600, the MIDI music from the SNES, or the fully orchestrated masterpieces heard in the current generation of consoles, music has played an ever important role in shaping a video game. I want to take this time to share some of my personal favorites from my gaming past. I highly encourage you to sit back, pump up the volume, and bask in the warmth that a finely tuned gaming song can give you.
