Sunday Roundup: 9/1/13

New Games (9-1-13)Something must have been burning a hole in my pocket because I spent quite a few dollars on games this week. I say something because it’s not like I was sitting on a pile of money that I could spend willy nilly on whatever I wanted. At least I can take solace in knowing that I bought these games on sale and saved a few bucks that way. Yeah, we’ll go with that…

Worth Playing vol. 6: The Brawler Bunch

Double Dragon II ArtBrawlers, beat-em ups, side-scrollers (to an extent), and just plain arcade. Whatever you label the genre one thing is for sure: there are a ton of them out there!

Since I started playing video games on the NES there have been side-scrolling beat-em ups. My beginnings were with the Double Dragon series on the NES, which then evolved into the Genesis classics Golden Axe I and II. The love affair took off from there, with every generation producing unique and worthwhile entries in the genre. Though there has been a decline with the recent consoles, a spare brawler rises out of the ashes of nostalgia and captures my heart all over again. The following games aren’t in any sort of order. They’re all just games that are entirely worth your time.

Review: Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara

DnD Chronicles of Mystara CoverThe arcade scene is all but gone today. When the business was booming in the 90s arcades were the only way to play particular games because not all arcade titles were ported to consoles. Even if they were ported, some were never released in the US; this is the case with Capcom’s duo of arcade titles based on the Dungeons & Dragons franchise. So unless you lived in Japan or imported the Sega Saturn compilation, arcades were your only alternative.

Jump ahead sixteen years and Capcom has rectified this injustice by releasing Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara, an HD re-release of both arcade classics Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara. With gameplay that holds up to this day, support for up to four players, online matchmaking, unlockable content, and plenty of replay value, Chronicles of Mystara is well worth the wait. (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 6/23/13

New Games (6-23-13)

Wow, it’s been quite some time since the last Sunday Roundup! I believe one month might be a record for a draught between entries, but seeing as the last one was extravagant and this one is full of quality games and deals, I think the wait is justified. This week’s games come to us from a dying Blockbuster Video. It’s always sad to see a store closing for good, but honestly I was surprised there were any Blockbuster’s still around. On top of that, this store looked crazy old, like it had been around for decades. Anyway, a few good games this week, and all of them still newish.

Review: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Call of Juarez Gunslinger CoverCall of Juarez: Gunslinger takes all the stereotypes of the Wild West and exaggerates them as far as they can go: famous bandits like Jesse James and Billy the Kid are real enemies, bar fights and scuffles with outlaws are commonplace, and duels in the streets are usually the best way to end a disagreement. Gunslinger utilizes these in conjunction with streamlined gameplay, well-paced storytelling, and attention to detail to create an entertaining and exciting shooter. (more…)

Top Ten E3 2013 Announcements and Stories

E3 2013 LogoE3 2013 has come and gone. By many standards it was what we’d come to expect from the expo: new game announcements, news on all kinds of projects, and some exclusive trailers, demos, and videos. But just about everyone can agree that this year’s E3 went above and beyond the expectations of most in attendance. It wasn’t just about the games this year: it was about the consoles and how they affect the gamers. It was about a change in the way we game and how our hobby will change moving forward. It was about publishers making games that gamers wanted to play. And above all, it was about glorifying our hobby and giving us an undeniable outlet to look at and say without wavering that we’re proud to be gamers. These ten announcements are just the tip of the events that made E3 2013 so memorable, and what you should be most excited for. (more…)

E3 2013 Gameplay and Trailer Extravaganza

E3 2013 Logo Day 4The final day of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo has come to an end. Every E3 supplies us with thrills and excitement over upcoming games, newly announced IPs, and titles that we otherwise would have never heard of before. With the addition this year of the new consoles (the Xbox One and PlayStation 4) and the mountains of talk and news they brought, this year’s E3 felt like a rollercoaster ride that was nothing but ups. Most of the news has died down as the show has dwindled to its last day, so I’m going to highlight a few games that stood out at this years show, and present you with gameplay trailers, content videos, and even some demos of the games that were shown off on the floor. If you can’t make it to E3 (one day I’ll make it there!) then this is your best shot of experiencing what it’s like in the madness. (more…)

E3 2013 Day 3 Recap

E3 2013 Logo Day 3Just one day left for this year’s E3! The major press conferences are over, so we can assume that there won’t be any more surprises this year (which is always sad, but there is so much to be happy about already!). With today over and tomorrow being the last for this year’s expo, most outlets are playing demons, interviewing developers, and finding out a few extra details about games and consoles. Tomorrow I’ll wrap up with a bunch of trailers, gameplay vids, and more, but for today, eat up these fine morsels of gaming goodness!

E3 2013 Day 2 Recap

E3 2013 Logo Day 2Nintendo held their “Press Conference” for E3 this year via a new Nintendo Direct video. Though it lacked the on-stage flair many E3 press conferences ooze, it still provided us with plenty of new games and announcements, with the top of the list being news about the next Super Smash Bros. title. Today was technically the first day of the actual expo, so we were also given a lot of hands-on impressions and demos, as well as some new gameplay trailers and info on both games and systems.
