E3 2013 Day 1 Recap

E3 2013 Logo Day 1The annual Electronics Entertainment Expo (more commonly abbreviated to E3) held in Los Angeles, California is one of the world’s biggest showcases for video games. It’s the big stage for developers, publishers, and game companies to show off their newest titles, what they’re currently working on, and entice the consumer with plenty of surprise announcement, unexpected  blunders, and everything between. This year was no exception, with handfuls of huge announcements, not the least of which concerning the newest video game consoles, Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One. In case you missed it, here’s a breakdown of all the biggest and best stories, news, and headlines from day one of this year’s E3. (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 5/19/13

New Games (5-19-13)Special thanks go out this week to JJ I met over at Splitkick. He pointed me toward a special 25% off sale at the game store eStarland (who also have a dated looking website to order games).

I went nuts.

On top of that, I picked up a few games off Craigslist that I’ve been looking to purchase for years. Seriously, years! And each of them were fantastic prices. Read on, as there are quite a few games this week to browse.

A Very Long Overdue Sunday Roundup

New Games (4-28-13)For the better part of three weeks now I have been living in California! The move from Indiana had been planned for quite some time and I can finally say it’s done and over. A few hiccups aside, the transition has been mostly successful, and I’m finally starting to get into a new groove. Unfortunately while in this transition the blog has suffered from sparse updates and weak ones at that. But I’m here now to rectify this week’s glaring omission: The Sunday Roundup. Despite moving to a new place, I actually did manage to pick up new games (surprisingly I’ve procured new games each week I’ve been here). Without further delay, here are this week’s new games!

Sunday Roundup: 4/21/13

New Games (4-21-13)Moving to California has been an adventure to say the least. We’re not entirely moved in yet, but we’re getting there. After a week of the beautiful weather, I can honestly say video games were not on my radar. But as luck would have it, I still managed to grab a few games, thanks largely to GameStop’s 50% off sale. Even with said sale I picked up some titles that weren’t on promo, but still were a good price. One I was completely shocked with too! Here’s the first haul of the new living location. And here’s hoping for many finds to come! (more…)

Review: Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons

Double Dragon II Wander of the Dragons CoverRemaking a classic video game is tricky work. Developers have to capture the essence of the title that made it popular many years back, while updating it to fit the norms and requirements of modern video games. No matter how good the remake may be, some fans will inevitably scoff at the blasphemy the developer has bestowed upon their beloved franchise. Some of these remakes are excellent, such as 2012’s Double Dragon: Neon, a wonderful blend of cooperative combat, cheesy humor, and 80’s flair with great appeal to both old fans and new gamers. And then there are games like Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons that has so little in common with the source material and it’s riddled with utterly broken game design that it’s a disgrace to those that enjoyed any previous Double Dragon game. Sunday Roundup: 3/24/13

New Games (3-24-13)There was a 20% off sale at a local game store this week, and seeing as this will likely be the last real time I am able to go there, I had to take advantage. I also decided that since I may or may not ever find a store that sells Sega Saturn games I should pick up one last classic game for the console. And then that same day I happened into a Best Buy store and noticed they had a makeshift sign that read, “Games on sale this week.” Hmm, interesting… perhaps I should actually considering going back there. Review: Darkstalkers Resurrection

Darkstalkers Resurrection CoverCapcom is a leader in the arcade fighting game scene and arguably the company behind the genre’s best titles. Iconic characters Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, among others have a dedicated place in many a gamers’ hearts, thanks in part to Street Fighter’s flawless blend of 2D combat, thrilling action, and tournament accessibility. Left in the shadows, perhaps fittingly, has been Capcom’s other 2D fighting series Darkstalkers. The gothic setting, fantasy-influenced roster of combatants and smooth fighting system à la Street Fighter has been dormant for over a decade. Thankfully Capcom has given the series a reboot in the form of Darkstalkers Resurrection, an HD port of the series last two arcade titles: Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. Worth Playing vol. 5: The Remake Rendition

Ken HD ComparisonThe remake.
It’s been around for years and it has become more common for a developer or publisher to remake or re-release their titles for a new generation to play and enjoy. Many of these games are vanilla ports of their original versions but there are a few that I can say are better than their originals. Needless to say these games are worth your time and will leave you feeling both excited and nostalgic.

Now Playing: Christmas Games

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy CoverThere’s always video games on my Christmas list. Ever since I can remember I’ve always asked for a game (usually more than one) for Christmas. Year after year I am always delighted and truly grateful each time I pick up a package that’s in the shape of a game and wonder what it could be. Like a kid with any new toy, after I open up each present all I can think about is how fun it’s going to be to actually play with my new gift. This past week I’ve been lucky enough to not only have some time off work, but also extra free time to sit down and play several of these games already. Check out my latest Sunday Roundup to see each game I so graciously received as a gift for Christmas, but before then check out below how each game I’ve played so far is shaping up. (more…)

Yearly Roundup: 2012

New Games (8-26-12)Another year draws to a close and 2013 is right in front of us. What better way to look back on the year that was 2012 than reliving each and every game purchase of the year! You may recall last year I did something very similar at the end of the year, but this time around it’s a bit more special. 2012 was Slick Gaming’s first full calendar year being a live blog (a feat I still can’t grasp entirely). That means a lot of things, like more posts and features than before, but it also means an entire year’s worth of new games chronicled in the Sunday Roundup feature. Let’s start out in January and take a look back at the year in games! (more…)
