Nintendo Retrospective: The Nintendo Entertainment System

With the release of the Nintendo Switch, the video game world is abuzz with all things Nintendo. A new console means plenty of new games, and with Nintendo, each new console brings back memories of years and consoles past. What better way to celebrate the release of the Switch than by looking back on the consoles that shaped my childhood. In part one of this personal retrospective, we’ll be looking back at the very first Nintendo console, the legendary Nintendo Entertainment System, and how personally impacted my video gaming life. Pro Tips for Playing Fire Emblem: Heroes

Nintendo has been cranking out Fire Emblem games fairly consistently over the past couple years, with last year seeing two games in the form of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest, and this year seeing Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia releasing in April. Beyond that we’re looking at a crossover Hyrule Warriors style with Koei Tecmo on the upcoming Nintendo Switch titled Fire Emblem Warriors, as well as a yet-unnamed console version coming on the Switch as well. Until those (hopefully) excellent games all release, we are given Fire Emblem: Heroes to toy around with on our mobile devices. Stripping away most of the expected content that makes a Fire Emblem game a Fire Emblem game, Heroes still manages to capture the essence of the series and bring it (for free, mind you) to the masses of iPhone and Android users. For those of you just starting the game, or for you FE mainstays looking to get an edge, here are some pro tips to make your teams successful on the battlefield! (more…)

Top Ten Games of 2016

Better late than never, right?

After a month offline thanks to an inconvenient WordPress issue, I’m finally able to get back on here and write! And what better way to make up for lost time than to look back on the year that was 2016! There are a few features on this blog that I’d call an annual event, and the top ten games of the prior year is definitely one of them. Unlike other blogs, especially the big sites out there, my list of games doesn’t consist of just games that released in 2016. Rather these are the top ten games I actually got around to playing the past year. Here are my top ten games of 2016! (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 12/18/16

It’s been busy season over here, and as such I haven’t been able to get to this blog for almost two weeks! Thankfully during this time I’ve had plenty of opportunities to swing by some video game stores and take advantage of the sales of the season! A rule I’ve always stuck by during late November through December is not buying games that are on my Christmas list. Therefore most of these games aren’t all too spectacular. But hey, they’re here now, and that’s what really matters! (more…)

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes is Fun, But it’s Not Four Swords

Nearly a year ago, when Nintendo released the Zelda-offshoot Tri Force Heroes the inevitable comparison between it and the Gamecube’s Four Swords Adventure came in full force. And with good reason: the two games share many commonalities including multiplayer, teamwork to complete puzzles, different colored Links, and so forth. While Four Swords remains in many a gamer’s hearts thanks to its cheery attitude and shakeup to the standard Zelda formula, Tri Force Heroes hasn’t seemed to reach that echelon. At least not yet…

Sunday Roundup: 11/27/16

new-games-11-27-16This could very well be a first for Sunday Roundup: We’ve got not one, but two new consoles on this week’s update of games! And to make it even better, there are more than a dozen PS1 games I picked up from a friend back in Michigan City, many of them rare and hard to find in excellent condition! Prices were fair and they were shipped here well, so really no complaints around. Also, Buy 2 Get 1 Free for Black Friday deals at GameStop always get my cravings up. Here we go! (more…)

Skyrim is a Testament to Open World RPGs

With the re-release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, I’ve finally gotten a chance to play what many call the greatest Western RPG of all time. It is strange that I somehow played the previous title, Oblivion, multiple times, and actually owned the original Skyrim on Xbox 360, but never played Skyrim until this re-release. Regardless, I can say without a doubt after having spent dozens of hours scouring the land of Skyrim that this game is all kinds of fun! (more…)

Castlevania: A Personal Retrospective

Zombies, ghouls, ghosts, and of course, vampires.

If you’ve been playing games for any decent amount of time, chances are you’ve at least heard of the Castlevania series of horror-themed action RPGs. With it’s origins dating back to the original NES, and the newest releases still coming steadily (spiritual successors included), it’s hard to think of a game series more fitting for this Halloween season. Appearing on virtually every console, with dozens of heroes, hundreds of villains, and plenty of memories, I wanted to take a look back at the genre defining Castlevania series! (more…)
