Game Hunter’s Journal: Knowledge is Power

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 There is no Knowledge That is Not PowerBoiling down game collecting to its core leaves you with the essential elements of the hobby. Of course procuring games is one of these said elements. Key to the success of any fruitful collector is knowledge. Knowing about games, the series they belong to, the development staff behind them, and other useful information can turn you on to games you may not otherwise give a second thought to. Here are some tips for discovering your next favorite game in the sea of lesser known titles. (more…)

The Recurring Bosscast: 015: Jason and Jett Do Vegas

If only our adventures in Las Vegas were done up in a “Beavis and Butt-Head: Do America” feature film…

Alas we’re left with the otherwise excellent episode 15 of the Recurring Bosscast! Call it luck, fate, or sheer circumstance, but Jett and I happened to meet one another in America’s playground, Las Vegas! Mat unfortunately was left alone and cold as he was not in Vegas, and his girlfriend was in Iceland (which is much greener than Greenland, which is much cooler than Iceland. Go figure!)

This week’s topic was a damn good one: disappointing video game sequels! Mat and I have a scuffle over Final Fantasy VIII, I proclaim Mortal Kombat II as the pinnacle of the series, and there is very little love for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sunday Roundup: 5/12/13

Two quick games this week, thanks to Groupon of all places. I've used the online coupon site before for this and that, and I've always seen game deals on there.…

Sunday Roundup: 5/5/13

New Games (5-5-13)Rather than give you the full intro for the Sunday Roundup, I’m going to direct you to an article I wrote a while back about Goodwill. I’ve spoken at length about Goodwill and thrift shops being a game hunters friend. I’ve reminisced about how I found rare games or totally insane deals while sifting through the racks, and I’ve always accented these stories with the one or two exceptional finds I’ve found (i.e. Diablo on PS1). Well, I’m tacking on another title to that list this week!

Mario and Donkey Kong’s Decades Long Battle

Mario and Donkey KongMario and Donkey Kong.
Two names synonomous with video games that have been around since before many gamers can even remember. Whether it’s Donkey Kong running through a jungle, Mario jumping over barrels, or the two of them racing go-karts, the Nintendo mascots have been locked in competition since the beginning of the Japanese game company’s storied history.
Since the release of 1981’s arcade classic title Donkey Kong, an oversized gorilla and an Italian plumber have been going at it for decades. Let’s take a look back at each and every video game featuring the duo going head-to-head. (more…)

A Very Long Overdue Sunday Roundup

New Games (4-28-13)For the better part of three weeks now I have been living in California! The move from Indiana had been planned for quite some time and I can finally say it’s done and over. A few hiccups aside, the transition has been mostly successful, and I’m finally starting to get into a new groove. Unfortunately while in this transition the blog has suffered from sparse updates and weak ones at that. But I’m here now to rectify this week’s glaring omission: The Sunday Roundup. Despite moving to a new place, I actually did manage to pick up new games (surprisingly I’ve procured new games each week I’ve been here). Without further delay, here are this week’s new games!

I don’t know how we managed, but the Bosscast has secured an interview with Fake Ed Boon! Listen to the new episode to hear exclusive answers to questions like the forthcoming Mortal Kombat vs. NBA Jam, and the final DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us.

Also this week, I tell of my experiences at the Nintendo press event in San Francisco, Mat gives us a great story of a trolling gamer, and Jett passes down his knowledge of Iceland.

What to Expect from the new Legend of Zelda

Link to the Past 2 LogoWith every new Nintendo console comes a brand new Legend of Zelda. It should come as no surprise that the Big N has announced a new game starring the green-clad hero for the 3DS: the Japanese developer has been steadily releasing Zelda games for each and every one of its consoles and handhelds for over two decades. What could come as a shock to some gamers is the setting and style for the new, as yet unnamed, 3DS Zelda. The game takes place in the same Hyrule we explored on the SNES in 1992 with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 4/21/13

New Games (4-21-13)Moving to California has been an adventure to say the least. We’re not entirely moved in yet, but we’re getting there. After a week of the beautiful weather, I can honestly say video games were not on my radar. But as luck would have it, I still managed to grab a few games, thanks largely to GameStop’s 50% off sale. Even with said sale I picked up some titles that weren’t on promo, but still were a good price. One I was completely shocked with too! Here’s the first haul of the new living location. And here’s hoping for many finds to come! (more…)
