Sunday Roundup: 3/24/13

New Games (3-24-13)There was a 20% off sale at a local game store this week, and seeing as this will likely be the last real time I am able to go there, I had to take advantage. I also decided that since I may or may not ever find a store that sells Sega Saturn games I should pick up one last classic game for the console. And then that same day I happened into a Best Buy store and noticed they had a makeshift sign that read, “Games on sale this week.” Hmm, interesting… perhaps I should actually considering going back there. Gaming News: 3/23/13

Ducktales Remastered TitlePAX East is upon us! And as for news from the convention you can expect half a days worth of goodness here and the rest next week, thanks to the unfortunate timing of the release of this post!

In non-PAX news, Square Enix is re-releasing some games, Capcom is still re-releasing some games, and EA is moving around it’s top management. (more…)

Review: Darkstalkers Resurrection

Darkstalkers Resurrection CoverCapcom is a leader in the arcade fighting game scene and arguably the company behind the genre’s best titles. Iconic characters Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, among others have a dedicated place in many a gamers’ hearts, thanks in part to Street Fighter’s flawless blend of 2D combat, thrilling action, and tournament accessibility. Left in the shadows, perhaps fittingly, has been Capcom’s other 2D fighting series Darkstalkers. The gothic setting, fantasy-influenced roster of combatants and smooth fighting system à la Street Fighter has been dormant for over a decade. Thankfully Capcom has given the series a reboot in the form of Darkstalkers Resurrection, an HD port of the series last two arcade titles: Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. The Recurring Bosscast: 011 – BioVania

Episode 011 LogoThis week’s Bosscast topic is Bioshock and all things related.

Somehow the topic of Bioshock got Jett, Mat, and myself discussing video game movies, remembering anything worthwhile about Bioshock 2, and the awesome that will never happen in the Castlevania-Bioshock crossover. We can only hope.

Also this week Mat and I diverge on our mutual dislike of Castlevania: Mirror of Fate, and Jett explains why Darkstalkers Resurrection is a competent 2D fighting collection.

Gaming News: 3/16/13

Left 4 Dead 2 Resident Evil 6 Crossover EllisThe oddest piece of news this weeks reminds me that April Fool’s is right around the corner. Though I’m sure it’s not a prank just yet, a Resident Evil 6 and Left 4 Dead 2 crossover is in the works!

Also this week, Nintendo gets sued and Apollo Justice will be in the next Ace Attorney game. Coincidence that the game will be on the 3DS, the very console Nintendo was sued over? I think it’s a conspiracy… (more…)

Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate

Castlevania Mirror of Fate CoverThe Castlevania series has enjoyed years of success on handheld systems. The previous three games in the series on the DS were arguably some of the best in the entire series. However, a reboot of the franchise occurred on the consoles in 2010 with the release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The new game retained the gothic setting and whip-based action, but replaced much of the mythos with a fresh take on the story and took a more hack-n-slash, God of War-like approach. While this may have reinvigorated the franchise on the consoles, it has absolutely no place on the handhelds. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate is a victim of itself, trying to blend the new style of Lords of Shadow with the “Metroidvania” gameplay the DS and GBA games have perfected, but instead falls short in almost every category. Review: Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan

Etrian Odyssey IV CoverI recently had the opportunity to review a game very similar to Etrian Odyssey IV on the 3DS, Unchained Blades, itself a port from the PSP. I reference this past review because Etrian Odyssey IV does everything right that Unchained Blades did wrong. This fourth installment in the Atlus dungeon crawling RPG series is the best entry the entire genre has seen in a long time, and if we’re lucky it will start a steady influx of quality titles.
