What can you get for $10 these days? Two five dollar footlongs at Subway, at least until Thursday. Half of a T-shirt? Maybe some cheap flatware from Wal-Mart? This week I determined that $10 can net you more than some lame cutlery or fast food. It can be six video games! Sure, it’s not six of the newest games, but it’s six video games that can suck up way more time than some silly sandwich.
Last week at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting in New York, the Japaneses company officially announced the PlayStation 4. No longer ruled by just speculation, we received plenty of details about the next generation of gaming from Sony. While there are many questions still left unanswered, many rumors were validated or debunked. Here’s the rundown from the press event. Welcome to the next generation of video games! (more…)
While I was growing up, I subscribed to Tips & Tricks magazine. Like most kids I was drawn in with the last half of magazine being dedicated to cheat codes and hints for all my games. Even better was when they pushed out one of their “Code Books” which ditched every written article entirely to house just these cheats. While I was a fan of the codes, I would pretty much read the magazine front to back because there wasn’t any internet in our house to occupy my time otherwise, so this was my only means of gaming related news each month. Being into fighting games since Mortal Kombat II, I was attracted to the one or two page monthly feature ranking the best fighting game players in the US and the rest of the world. These were names that you still hear today, like Ricky Ortiz, Justin Wong, and the phenomenon that is Daigo Umehara. One thing I noticed about some of these players was their location: California. Specifically Sunnyvale, California. In my mind I pegged the cute sounding city as a Mecca for video game arcade fighting. As luck would have it, I happened to fall in love with a girl who lives five minutes away from Sunnyvale, and on top of that we’re looking to move to that exact city! On a recent visit I was able to stop in an arcade that has been on my radar since the Tips & Tricks days as a place the pros played: Golfland USA. The arcade scene is not what it used to be in the 90s and early 2000s, but Golfland has done its best to retain the good ol’ years of the video arcade. (more…)
What does the first week of the new year have in store for video games?
Not too much, actually. Only a few stories tickled my fancy this week, and even those weren’t as grand as expected. I guess I was hoping 2013 would start out with some crazy cool announcement. Hmm… maybe later this year we will finally get Power Stone 3.
One can hope… (more…)
You have to give credit to a series being around for 25 years. Mario, Link, Mega Man, the Street Fighter gang, and even Kirby have been around for well over 20 years. And then there’s Final Fantasy. A series whose very name implies there will only be one, yet a series that has been in gamers’ hearts for 25 years. 25 years of games means 25 years of music, and that’s saying a lot for a series as respected as Final Fantasy. To celebrate the quarter century mark for the franchise, Square Enix released Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy. Bringing together the heroes of all 13 numbered games in the series and infusing the gameplay with plenty of music and rhythmical action, Theatrhythm is a love letter to Final Fantasy fans. It also happens to be one of the better games on the 3DS. (more…)
I'm super excited to present to you all the inaugural episode of Game Hunter, a new series focusing on video game collecting! If you've been following Slick Gaming you're already…
There’s always video games on my Christmas list. Ever since I can remember I’ve always asked for a game (usually more than one) for Christmas. Year after year I am always delighted and truly grateful each time I pick up a package that’s in the shape of a game and wonder what it could be. Like a kid with any new toy, after I open up each present all I can think about is how fun it’s going to be to actually play with my new gift. This past week I’ve been lucky enough to not only have some time off work, but also extra free time to sit down and play several of these games already. Check out my latest Sunday Roundup to see each game I so graciously received as a gift for Christmas, but before then check out below how each game I’ve played so far is shaping up. (more…)
After a quarter century of Street Fighter and Mega Man games, Capcom has finally combined its two flagship franchises in a fan-made downloadable PC game, Street Fighter x Mega Man. Borrowing elements from each cherished and respected franchise, SFxMM is perhaps the most unique entry into either series’ storied history. Serving as the official 25th anniversary celebration for both franchises, SFxMM delivers exactly what it sets out to do: pay homage to the last 25 years of Capcom’s biggest franchises and please the fans. Another year draws to a close and 2013 is right in front of us. What better way to look back on the year that was 2012 than reliving each and every game purchase of the year! You may recall last year I did something very similar at the end of the year, but this time around it’s a bit more special. 2012 was Slick Gaming’s first full calendar year being a live blog (a feat I still can’t grasp entirely). That means a lot of things, like more posts and features than before, but it also means an entire year’s worth of new games chronicled in the Sunday Roundup feature. Let’s start out in January and take a look back at the year in games! (more…)
