This Week in Gaming News: 9/1/12 – 9/7/12

Have you ever given any thought to the order of the Mario games? Does Mario Tennis happen before Super Mario Bros. 3? Or better yet, did Mario just throw a few parties between saving Peach and defeating Bowser? Apparently someone thought about all this, because I found out this week there are gamers dedicated to finding out a definitive Mario timeline.

Also this week, A distant Zelda Wii U title sounds pretty amazing.

And on another sad note, gaming TV station and website G4 is likely coming to an end. Read on for more! (more…)

Review: Growlanswer: Wayfarer of Time

Hold on tight PSP fans, another tactical RPG is upon us. Published by Atlus, Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time is the fourth chapter in the Growlanser series, but only the third time Americans have been able to get their hands on the franchise. Touting hours upon hours of gameplay and 40 unique endings, Wayfarer of Time promised to be one of the last great PSP strategy games to be released. That’s why it’s disappointing the game is just mediocre.

The Question of Games Being Ported to iOS: Good or Bad?

Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems for mobile devices like smartphones and iPads/iPhones/iPod Touches have been getting a steady stream of games since their inception. It’s a guarantee that each week, if not each day, a new game or two will be released for the portable devices. Whether or not those games are worthwhile is an entirely different story. But what about those instances where the games being released are ports of actual console video games? It’s been happening more and more recently, and it has gotten me to think about just what that means to you and I as gamers, as well as to the publishers and developers of said games.

Modern Classics: DDRMAX2: Dance Dance Revolution

Once you feel the groove it’s hard to stop. As is the case with my recent reintroduction to the Dance Dance Revolution series. My previous Modern Classics entry was on the first PS2 DDR game, DDRMAX. The newest entry is none other than the sequel DDRMAX2. With more music, more step patterns, more modes, and more ways to get your groove on, MAX2 is one of the greatest games in the entire series. Too bad then that it was the last game that got it all right.

Sunday Roundup: 9/2/12

After months of having things to do on the weekend and/or during the week, I’m finally back to what you could call a normal week: I didn’t have anything to do this week except work and, well, work! Normal is a relative term though, because I’d much rather have plans or places to go like I had before. This work and no play stuff is boring. Not only that but I buy less games when I don’t go places! Oh well, at least Goodwill was good to me this week.

This Week in Gaming News: 8/25/12 – 8/31/12

For the last week in August there sure were a lot of new games announced. As a matter of fact, pretty much each piece of news I’ve included in this week’s edition pertains to new and upcoming releases. Isn’t that the best type of week though? One full of games to come. Games to get you excited to keep playing, and games that keep you satiated until the next one comes out. Truly this is our hobby at it’s greatest.

Side Projects Update

I’m not going to lie to you: I’ve been neglecting this blog for a few weeks now. It’s not for lack of content: I’ve had plenty to write about. As a matter of fact, a handful of game reviews went up in the past week, which is nice. But in terms of original content, I’ve had little more than my weekly releases of Sunday Roundups and Gaming News’. So I’ve decided to take this time to let you in on a little secret: I’ve been working a lot on other projects. I’ve also been just plain working too, which saps my energy most days, but I give you my work that Slick Gaming is not gone, and here’s why. (more…)

Review: Rock Band Blitz

Be honest: when was the last time you sat down and played a Rock Band/Guitar Hero game? If you’re like me, and undoubtedly countless other gamers, then your plastic instruments have been collecting dust somewhere, not nearly getting as much love as they use to just a couple short years ago. Well Harmonix, the creators of Rock Band, had that in mind when coming up with the newest iteration of their music simulator. Rock Band Blitz is a dramatic change for the series that gives gamers a different approach to the rhythm genre. (more…)

Review: Orcs Must Die 2

It was just one year ago that gamers took up the blade staff and orchestrated the mass genocide of orcs in the original Orcs Must Die. Now gamers have an entirely new adventure to play through, with thousands more orcs to slay, new weapons and traps to utilize, and an entirely new, albeit familiar, character to play. Oh yeah, and something called co-op multiplayer. By tweaking a few details of the formula and keeping the core gameplay from the original game, Orcs Must Die 2 takes and already great game and makes it much better.
