Quick Hits: iPhone Gaming Madness

This past week (and as my phone currently told me today is still going on) EA had a massive sale on all their iPhone video games. Most games were $.99 and my girlfriend game me a $10 iTunes gift card, so picking up a few was an easy choice. I’ve played through a few and wanted to touch on each lightly, mayhaps to entice one of you to get one yourself.

Scribblenauts Remix

Maxwell is back… in iOS form. The Scribblenauts series is such a unique couple of games, and I’m glad to see it on the iPhone. If you haven’t played the series on the DS, then you are missing out. You should also check out my review of the much better sequel, Super Scribblenauts, as this game is directly modeled after it. Pics below demonstrate how awesome the game is. I was actually able to beat the game in just a few days. It’s a short one, but it’s fun overall.

Mass Effect Galaxies

The Mass Effect games are among the greatest Western RPGs I have ever played. Easily. Mass Effect Galaxies, an iOS exclusive side story, tells the tale of Jacob Taylor of Mass Effect 2 fame. I haven’t been able to get much into it yet, but it’s a simple, mission based game. You control Jacob by sliding him via tilting the phone, and he attacks enemies automatically. It also features key Mass Effect archetypes, like multiple choices for dialogue, biotic powers, and sound effects and music. More pics below:

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

Ultimate Mortal Komabt 3 is not my favorite of the franchise (that’d be MKII), but seeing as it is the only one available on the iPhone, I really didn’t have a choice. Strangely, this version of the game changes the digitized sprites of the original game and replaces them with 3D models of the characters. It doesn’t look particularly bad, but I found it strange that they made this change: perhaps they couldn’t make the game fit right or something, I don’t know. Anyway, UMK3 for the iPhone has all the cast from the game, and uses only 5 buttons during gameplay (punch, kick, block, run, and special). This setup makes pulling off special moves and even fatalities as easy as hitting a button, and for purists the original 6-button layout is available in the options. I enjoyed the game the hour or so I played, and recommend it for anyone looking for a good MK experience on the go.

Jsick

I didn’t know there was a Mass Effect game for the iOS. That looks pretty cool. It doesn’t look like that Scribblenauts game missed a beat, either. It might be even sharper than the DS games, at least judging from the screenshots.

I actually prefer the DS version because it is an overall better, longer game. The iPhone puzzles are good, but they aren’t challenging or varied like the DS game’s puzzles are. Still though, it’s a great version of a very neat game.
