Review: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask

Traveling to remote villages, solving countless mysteries, and helping everyday citizens with simple brainteasers are all in a day’s work for Professor Hershel Layton. By now you pretty much know what to expect from a Professor Layton game: a good story, beautiful visuals, and of course lots of puzzles to keep your brain working for hours. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask is the fifth game in the series and the first to appear on the 3DS. With upgraded visuals, 150 new puzzles, and another solid mystery to solve, Miracle Mask is the professor’s best outing since the first game released in 2008.

I wasn’t quite sure how I’d feel about Professor Layton on the 3DS: I knew the graphics were going to be different, I knew the puzzles were going to change, and the previous game didn’t spark the same flame in my gaming heart as the titles before it. All of that concern was happily swept away after seeing Layton, Luke, and Emmy return to form. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll find a lot to love about Miracle Mask, and it should be sitting in your 3DS right now.

Luke and Layton are up to their old tricks again; solving puzzles, unraveling mysteries, and being awesome

I've been writing about video games for years and playing them even longer. You'll find me playing all types of games, old and new. Mega Man III is greater than Mega Man II.

  1. Nice! Glad to hear you enjoyed this one so much. It may be the reason I finally get a 3DS.

    1. It’s a really good game, and easily one of the best on the system. But to purchase the 3DS solely for this game, I don’t think I’d recommend. However, there are other solid offerings to play as well, namely anything from Nintendo.
