Review: The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

The Lord of the Rings is among the greatest fantasy epics ever told, and after the success of the movie franchise a bevy of tie-ins products, side stories, and other media was created to expand the universe. Snowblind’s newest action title is set in the land of Middle Earth but does not follow the paths of Frodo, Aragorn, or Gandalf; instead it tells an entirely new story. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North acts as a side car to the main storyline, telling of the heroic deeds of three brave warriors whose actions directly impacted the success of the Fellowship. Grab your axe, sharpen your swords, and get ready to kill some orcs.

As far as Lord of the Rings video games go, War in the North is actually quite good, but there just isn’t a driving reason to play the game through. I am still sort of shocked that a definitive, superb LotR game hasn’t been released yet. Correct me if I’m wrong, please.

Not all Dwarves are the same... but apparently most carry an axe

I've been writing about video games for years and playing them even longer. You'll find me playing all types of games, old and new. Mega Man III is greater than Mega Man II.

  1. Great review, man. I wasn’t even aware there is a new LOTR game. You’re right — it’s really odd that a definitive LOTR epic game hasn’t been made yet. It seems like the perfect setting for a badass fantasy masterpiece. I mean, if something like Batman can get some GOTY-quality titles, LOTR should be able to as well.

    1. That’s a good point. Batman does have some fantastic games attached to it. Maybe there’s something here we’re not following. The Batman movies have been around longer than the LotR ones, so perhaps we must wait ever longer.
