Castlevania Mirror of Fate CoverCastlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate
3DS
Release Date: March 5th, 2013
Purchased at: N/A (Review Copy)

Just one new game this week, but it’s one I’ve been looking forward to playing. Lords of Shadow is a spinoff series to the vanilla Castlevania and it’s a bit darker and action-y than the previous series. This is also the first portable Castlevania game since 2008’s Order of Ecclesia on the DS. Seeing as that game and pretty much every portable game in the series is stellar, this game has some hefty shoes to fill (spinoff or not). My time with the game so far has been good: I like the dark visuals and hack-n-slash gameplay, as well as getting to play as series stalwart Simon Belmont again. More to come in the review!

I’m curious to hear your thoughts. I had a hard time with the demo and kept dying. I couldn’t get past the first “boss” (or mini-boss probably), and figured I was just doing something wrong. As a huge Castlevania fan I could really get into it…if I knew what I was doing. 🙂

The difficulty is very up-and-down. Some enemies just drill into you relentlessly, so it was likely not your imagination if you were dying over and over.
Early thoughts on the game are good, but I wish it was more like the DS/GBA versions, and by that I mean not set in the Lords of Shadow universe.

I really liked Lords of Shadow on PS3 (although it’s in my unfinished pile). I could get into a portable/2D version in that world.

And that’s really what Mirror of Fate is. Well, 2.5D to be more precise 🙂
