Sunday Roundup: 7/1/12

Here’s a pro tip that I just learned this week:

Pawn shops are good places to look for games.

There has been a pawn shop in my hometown for years, and I have never managed to venture inside it until last week (Wednesday, to be precise). And I found that not only did they have a healthy selection of vintage coins and jewelry, but also a nice selection of video games. And you know what, most of them were marked at very fair and reasonable prices!

Alien Hominid
PlayStation 2
Release Date: November 18th, 2004
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – $3)

The Behemoth gained a huge amount of notoriety when they released Xbox Live classic Castle Crashers, but it was Alien Hominid that was their first game. The game has many elements seen in the later Castle Crashers, including multiplayer, action-RPG elements, and the same cute-yet-crude art style. I am actually very excited to play this one, and hope to get some quality time in with it this week.

Death Jr.
PSP
Release Date: August 16th, 2005
Purchased at: Game Changers (Michigan City, IN – $5)

No real reason for getting this one other than the promise I made to myself three weeks ago. It’s… unsettling to me to have the second game in a series and not the first. And for that matter, even if the second, or third (or even later) game in the series is better than the first, I still have to play them in order. If not that, then I’ll play one and force myself to play them the others. Or I’ll just pass on all of them altogether, which very well could happen to this game. Now to find that DS version…

Dragon Age II
Xbox 360
Release Date: March 8th, 2011
Purchased at: AmeriPawn (Michigan City, IN – $6)

Strangely, I somehow managed to buy the same game (albeit on different consoles) in the same month. That… might be a first. Anyway, Dragon Age II on Xbox 360. The game still looks good, and this means I might not have to open up that sealed PC version after all. Even though I hear the PC interface for the first game was much better, so maybe the second one will be, too.

Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure
3DS
Release Date: October 16th, 2011
Purchased at: AmeriPawn (Michigan City, IN – $10)

Here’s the good news: I found Skylanders for the 3DS in very good condition for only ten bucks. And here’s the bad news: It didn’t come with the Portal of Power. I figured while I was at the store that since I have the PS3 version and therefore a Portal of Power that I didn’t need another. Some research online suggests that I may be wrong. Oh well, the hunt will continue then for a decent Portal of Power for the 3DS.

Watchmen: The End is Nigh
Xbox 360
Release Date: July 21st, 2009
Purchased at: AmeriPawn (Michigan City, IN – $3)

Lastly this week we have the coop beat-em up, Watchmen: The End is Nigh. Naturally the game came out around the time the movie was released, and the game looked like nothing more than a cheap cash-in. The original release was download only, with two episodes compiling the complete game. My brother was interested in this one, but I’m actually not sure if he ever got his hands on it. Anyway, I really don’t expect much from this game… maybe some each Achievements or something like that, but nothing more.

Laters,
Jsick
