Sunday Roundup: 7/29/12

After a nonexistent Sunday Roundup last week, things are back the way I prefer them to be this week, with a handful of new titles. And a game that I’ve been meaning to buy for months now. With a special story to boot!

Nervous Brickdown
DS
Release Date: June 26th, 2007
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – Free)

I know very little about this game other than it being free (with the buy 5, get 1 free deal at Disc Replay). The box and some research tells me the game is a collection of minigames and puzzles. Oh, and it was totally first released on my birthday. That’s got to be a sign.

Prince of Persia: The Fallen King
DS

Release Date: December 2nd, 2008
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – $3)

Here’s a story for you. I have very little experience with the Prince of Persia series, but this game has always caught my eye. And I mean that I always looked at the cover art and thought, “Aww, that’s adorable! Look at the prince, all chibi and ready to kill!” Well, fast forward four years and I finally bought the game because the price was right.

Lock’s Quest
DS
Release Date:
September 8th, 2008
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – $3)

Lock’s Quest is a mash-up of two game genres: tower defense and action RPG. You get to build up your own stronghold by placing units and defenses to stop the incoming invasion of baddies. And then you get to fight it out in the frontlines in the action RPG segments. Sign me up, that sounds awesome!

Mass Effect 3
Xbox 360
Release Date: March 6th, 2012
Purchased at: GameStop (Michigan City, IN – $27)

A cool thing about giving out your email address to receive coupons, or in this case giving out your email to become part of the Power Up pro membership, you get coupons and promotional deals. For my birthday last month I got a 20% off any used game or accessory coupon. After about a month of deliberating what (if anything) to buy, I settled on Mass Effect 3. Not only that, but when I went to buy the game, the GameStop clerk said they had a Collector’s Edition used copy for the same price that I could purchase. So I did. And it was a great day.

Pandemonium!
PS1
Release Date: October 31st, 1996
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – $4)

I also know very little about this one, except that I’ve been eying it on the shelf for over a year now, waiting for the right price to rear its head. Apparently that right price was $4 because I bought the game and haven’t played it just quite yet.

Crackdown
Xbox 360
Release Date: February 20th, 2007
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – $3)

Not being a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, I was not too excited for Crackdown, or its highly regarded sequel. But for $3 I’ll try any game. And since this game is generally well regarded, I couldn’t say no.

Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust
Xbox 360
Release Date: March 31st, 2009

Purchased at: Disc Replay (Lafayette, IN – $4)

Let me explain. I didn’t actually want this game. My girlfriend thought the idea behind it (basically to see digital boobies), was funny, and so we bought it. A quick glance at reviews cited on Wikipedia list it as one of the worst games of all time, and numerous awards for the worst game of 2009. So, naturally, I can’t wait to play it!

Crackdown 1 is awesome. Loved the demo, then picked up the game for $15 back in 2009 and it was so worth it. Don’t bother with the sequel, which is essentially a reskin of the original along with zombies. Saw the sequel on sale for $4 and still couldn’t justify it.

I just finished Mass Effect 3 a few weeks ago. It’s a pretty damn good conclusion. In a way, the ME trilogy kind of reminds me of The Dark Knight. It starts off with a pretty good origin story (8/10), follows up with an amazing sequel (near 10/10) and then ends with an epic finale that people will be talking and debating about for a long time (9/10). Come to think of it, that could be a good blog post… 😀
