Top Ten Pick Ups of 2014

Lost in Shadow CoverIn lieu of the usual Yearly Roundup, where I recount every game added to the collection over the past year, this year I’ve decided to do something different. As with every year here on SlickGaming there are many excellent finds and surprising deals on video games each and ever month, and I’ve always had a blast sharing them all with you. But now it’s time to look at the best of the best from 2014. I purchase a lot of games that are, for better or worse, padding to the collection. Now it’s time to look past those and determine the best, most exciting, and generally awesome finds of the last year. The following games (or groups of games) were the most impressive additions to the catalog in 2014. They’re not necessarily the rarest or most hard to find, but rather the most memorable pickups and greatest deals. (more…)

Top Ten Failed Video Game Reboots

Sonic Boom Banner

Sometimes a game character goes away. Every now and then they come back.

Sometimes a game character comes back. Every now and then it doesn’t go as planned.

While this list could almost entirely be populated by Sonic the Hedgehog reboots, I’ll limit it to just one reboot per franchise. Regardless, having to place a limit on how many times a franchise can be on a “Top Ten Failed Video Game Reboots” list should tell you something. (more…)

My Scariest Moments in Gaming

Resident Evil Licker

With Halloween right around the corner, I thought of my previous Halloween-themed post and thought I needed to do something more “traditional.” While I’m not the most adventurous when it comes to horror games, I have dabbled in the genre and come out fairly frightened and thoroughly entertained on many occasions. The bigger the game, the more likely I am to play it, so all the Resident Evil’s and Dead Space’s tend to stay on my radar, while the smaller scary games like Amnesia (though, apparently, just as valid if not better than the aforementioned series’) are just not going to see my time. Despite this, my list of “Scariest Video Games” is likely not the same as anyone else, mainly because what I consider to be my most frightening moments don’t necessarily come from the survival horror genre. Let’s reminiscence about the scariest moments in gaming before Halloween is upon us! (more…)

Top Ten E3 2014 Moments

E3 2014 LogoThe 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo has officially come and gone, and left in it’s wake are mountains of exciting games to play, systems that look a hell of a lot better, and gamers who are proud to pronounce their hobby to any and all. Last year’s show was filled with announcements about the next generation consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, so this year it was expected that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo would put out plenty of new software to go with that shiny new hardware. These ten moments were the defining times of E3 2014, and the games I am most excited to play. (more…)

Characters I Want to See in Ultra Street Fighter IV

Ultra Street Fighter IV Logo

Without getting into a big fuss about the upcoming Ultra Street Fighter IV and the reveal of it’s newest character Decapre, I wanted to discuss some characters that I would have liked to see in the newest fighting game reiteration from Capcom. I do praise Capcom for bringing someone completely new to the battle, but even so there are some other cool fighters they could have included as well. Lists like these are almost always going to be geared towards the preferences of the person writing them, so keep that in mind when you see the list and I’m not including Charlie (because he’s kinda dead). Top Ten "Non-Final Fantasy" Final Fantasy Games

Kingdom Hearts 358 2 Days Art

You can’t be as venerable as the Final Fantasy series without spawning a few spinoffs. Usually the spinoff is a chance to use some of the same mechanics as the core series but make something drastically different: perhaps a totally different battle system, completely different approach to story, and sometimes just a celebration of the many years of success the source series has entertained. Regardless of the influence, there have been dozens of spinoffs and pseudo-sequels for Final Fantasy games, and none more awesome than the ten below.

Top Ten Final Fantasy Games

Final Fantasy VI Art

As the soon-to-be-classic RPG Bravely Default is out now on the Nintendo 3DS, myself and a lot of other RPG fans have been talking about the Final Fantasy series. It seems the one-time king of the JRPG has come a long way from the first game on the NES back in 1987: gone are the White Mages and Fighters from the early days, and in their place are MMORPGs and strangely named sequels like Final Fantasy XIII-2. But as Bravely Default has reminded us, there are a lot of great moments to hold on to and cherish in the Final Fantasy series. So, seeing as Final Fantasy is the topic of the time, I have been thinking a good deal about what my favorite FF games are. Having played most all of them, but notably not the newer games, I actually had a difficult time narrowing down the list to just ten. (more…)

Top Ten "What Was I Thinking?" Games on my Christmas List

Banjo ChristmasMaking a Christmas list has always been something my family required of me around the Thanksgiving holiday. When I say required I mean required: my parents would ask for a physical list so they knew what I might be interested in that year, and what they could tell other family members I’d like. While I’m truly blessed to have a family that cares deeply for me as my family does, keeping all of these lists over the past years has lead me to one very interesting conclusion… I’ve asked for some really strange games for Christmas! I’ve decided to share a few of those with you all here, in what I am calling the Top Ten “What Was I Thinking?” Games on my Christmas List. (more…)
