Games I Have Somehow Never Played…

Yoshis Island Question MarkWell, this is embarrassing.

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has played video game for more than a few years that you just can’t play them all. No matter how hard you have tried, you can’t fit in each video game that releases in a year into your play rotation. Video games aren’t like movies: they can’t be seen and completed in a few short hours (at least most of them). They aren’t as easy to come by in some instances. And sometimes they simply don’t fit into your budget.

For this reason or that, we all have games that we’ve never gotten around to playing. Triple A games, too. The games that may have defined a generation. The games that people are still talking about to this day. The games that you kind of have to just shake your head at when others are discussing around you because you have no idea what is going on.

These are those games. Below you will find the shame of my gaming expertise. These are the games I’ve never played. At least as of yet. (more…)

Review: Mutant Mudds

Mutant Mudds Header

Whether you actually grew up in the 80’s or 90’s and can claim to have played video games during their “glory days”, there are plenty of current gen titles that let you relive the style of yesteryear. Take Mutant Mudds for examples. It’s a side scrolling, 8-bit action/platformer with a high degree of difficulty and plenty of challenge. Some may call it a “hardcore” game, while others will say it harkens back to the NES games of yore. But me? I just call it a pretty damn excellent game! (more…)

Tomodachi Life Has Totally Won Me Over

Tomodachi Life - Virtual Boy
Man, talk about selling a game!

Earlier today, Nintendo released a new Nintendo Direct focusing on the quirky 3DS game, Tomodachi Life. Previously released only in Japan, this Nintendo Direct didn’t just give Western gamers a solid release date for their own region, it also let us delve into the wonderfully self-gratifying world on the Nintendo elite.

Before this special Nintendo Direct, I had little interest in the game, thinking it more a novelty than something I’d really enjoy. But after seeing this crazy video, I have decided that Tomodachi Life needs to be a part of my life.

A little bit Animal Crossing, and a dash of The Sims seems to make this new 3DS game a weird, wacky, one-of-a-kind game only Nintendo can create. (more…)

Sunday Roundup: 4/6/14

New Games (4-6-14)Weeks like this make me feel equally proud and kind of sad to be a collector. This week brought in a few truly excellent finds, as well as some games that were too good a deal to pass up. However, there’s always a caveat, this week it was being damn expensive. Usually I pride myself on picking up games on the cheap, hitting my magic price or under. No matter how hard you try though, you’ll soon discover if you haven’t already that some games are just expensive, and they probably aren’t going down in price any time soon. Before we get into this week’s haul, I feel like I can squeeze one more plug into a previous article. Let’s see, what would work… Oh, gotcha! And this as well! (more…)

Review: Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy Banner

It’s rare when a game series can span six entries and not hit its peak until the last game is released. Even more astounding is the Professor Layton series, where just about every game in the series can been seen as a highlight.

Seriously. They’re all that good.

Whether it’s the sublime storytelling and time traveling of Unwound Future, the first foray into 3D with Miracle Mask, or perhaps the very first adventure in the Curious Village, there are plenty of Layton games to choose from and have a truly excellent time playing.

With the release of Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy on the 3DS we are tearfully bidding farewell to our favorite English professor, as this is the last game to star the brilliant archaeologist. But in so doing we are met with perhaps the grandest and most robust game in the entire series.

One last adventure. One last puzzle. One last memory…

Worth Playing vol. 7: The Spinoff Spectacular

Wario Land Logo

Just like every other medium, video games often spawn sequels focused solely on once side characters, shining a light on their stories or adventures, and thus making the spinoff sequel. With video games specifically, the spinoff doesn’t have to focus on just a character: it can be a game that dramatically changes the gameplay but keeps the characters or storyline; it can be about a side story happening at the same time; it can focus on an entirely different character’s storyline altogether. It can be a lot of things. And an, there are a lot of spinoffs out there for your favorite franchises. Here are a handful of spinoff video games that are well worth your time. (more…)

Game Hunter's Journal: Buying Game Lots

eBay Banner

We’ve all been there: perusing the goods on sites like eBay or maybe even Craigslist and coming across someone selling a collection of games for a decent price. Sure, you probably don’t want all of the games there, but some of them are just too good to pass up! So what should you do?
