The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is widely considered to be one of the mighty Super Nintendo’s greatest games, even thought by some to be the best Zelda game ever made. Yes, surpassing the seemingly god-like Ocarina of Time in popularity and poise. Though it’s been over 20 years since A Link to the Past marveled us, it’s no surprise that Nintendo has decided to revisit that version of Hyrule once again with the 3DS’ Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. With plenty of hype and legacy to live up to, does the Hero of Time stand the test of time yet again with this new adventure? (more…)
Pokemon is everywhere.
The recent release of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y on the Nintendo 3DS has stirred up all kinds of talks amongst series fans, gaming outlets, and everyone that owns a 3DS. I’ve heard people saying this is the best version of the Pokemon games since the originals, that it’s a wonderful place for newcomers and veteran players to start (or re-start), and that the games have never looked, played, or sounded better. But what exactly makes these the best in the already legendary series of introduction RPGs? (more…)
One might think a video game about courtroom drama in which you’re defending seemingly helpless clients would make for a forgetful game. But throw in some absurdities like the prosecution lawyer being a convicted murderer, a witness who truly believes he is possessed by an ancient Japanese monster, a defense partner who can sense people’s emotions, and you’ve got a game that’s anything but boring. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is the first game in the main series to be released since 2008 and features new stories, characters, gameplay mechanics, and visuals. Have the hiatus and improvements been enough to push Phoenix and company past the shortcomings of the previous games?
Court is now in session. (more…)
By now you know what you’re getting with each new Pokemon game: more adorable creatures to catch, train, and battle, new regions to explore, and a lighthearted story that ties everything together. For more than fifteen years Nintendo has been releasing games that follow this very formula time and time again, and each new version sells millions. In no way a departure from the series form, Pokemon X and Y take small steps towards making an already great franchise even better. (more…)
Some RPGs are about telling a story.
Some are about finding the best loot.
Some are just about surviving, plain and simple.
And then there are RPGs like Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl that has the whole package: it constantly pits you against fearsome foes, always tempts you with a shiny new piece of equipment, and has an interesting story to boot. Etrian Odyssey Untold acts as both a remake and reimagining of the original DS game, and incorporates aspects from the recent Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan to create a game that is arguably the best in the series and one of the finest in the entire dungeon crawler genre. I can’t tell you how many times I played Harvest Moon and thought to myself, “Man, growing crops, starting a family, and helping out around town is great, but what this game’s really missing is monsters, dungeons, and battle axes.” Thankfully for all of you who share my concern a brand new Rune Factory game is here and it delivers on all your turnip-growing, monster-slaying desires.
The lure to the Scribblenauts franchise has remained the same game in and game out: use your imagination to create any object you can think of and have it appear in the game world. It is the heart of the series and where the different iterations of Scribblenauts shine; I was always impressed that I could actually create just about everything I had in mind. That said, while each new Scribblenauts game offered more creation opportunities and surprises, the same problems tended to show up again and again. Though they tried, not even the entire DC Universe can save Maxwell from another run of the mill adventure.
Gather ‘round my friends, and let’s listen to the gentlemanly tales of Baron Dashforth and his companion Mr. Scampwick. Stories full of skullduggery, malicious villains, and the most treacherous foe of all… repetition! Foul Play is a side scrolling beat ‘em up disguised as a theatre performance. While some innovative ideas separate the game from others in its genre, Foul Play is held back from greatness by simple combat and repetitive gameplay. (more…)
The Kingdom Hearts series has become one of the most well-regarded RPG franchises. Spanning over 10 years and seven unique games, it’s safe to say blending Disney with Final Fantasy has worked out well.
