Top Ten “What Was I Thinking?” Games on my Christmas List

Banjo ChristmasMaking a Christmas list has always been something my family required of me around the Thanksgiving holiday. When I say required I mean required: my parents would ask for a physical list so they knew what I might be interested in that year, and what they could tell other family members I’d like. While I’m truly blessed to have a family that cares deeply for me as my family does, keeping all of these lists over the past years has lead me to one very interesting conclusion… I’ve asked for some really strange games for Christmas! I’ve decided to share a few of those with you all here, in what I am calling the Top Ten “What Was I Thinking?” Games on my Christmas List. (more…)

Top Ten Classic Robot Masters

Mega Man III Stage SelectWith all the talk recently about Keiji Inafune’s hugely successful Kickstarter for Might No. 9, I have been doing a lot of recollecting about Mega Man. The Blue Bomber has always had a very special place in my heart, as many of you will already know should you follow this blog or listen to the Recurring Bosscast. I’ve played most all of the classic Mega Man games and was naturally more than excited when this spiritual successor by the original creator turned up on Kickstarter. All the thinking about Mega Man and his storied past got me on a mental spree about which were my favorite Robot Masters. With dozens to choose from, narrowing down the list to just ten was certainly not easy. Top Ten Games That Need HD Remakes

Cool Spot IntroRiding on the coattails of Scrooge McDuck and the HD remake of the NES classic DuckTales, I’ve been reminiscing about a lot of games from my childhood. And while yesteryear is strangely something I think about far more than a normal person should, this time I was beginning to wonder what some of my other favorite titles growing up would look like in glorious high definition. Though it’s strictly speculation and quite literally most of these will never be possible, it was fun to think of what could be. What should be, perhaps? But nonetheless, here are the top ten games that need HD remakes! (more…)

Worth Playing vol. 6: The Brawler Bunch

Double Dragon II ArtBrawlers, beat-em ups, side-scrollers (to an extent), and just plain arcade. Whatever you label the genre one thing is for sure: there are a ton of them out there!

Since I started playing video games on the NES there have been side-scrolling beat-em ups. My beginnings were with the Double Dragon series on the NES, which then evolved into the Genesis classics Golden Axe I and II. The love affair took off from there, with every generation producing unique and worthwhile entries in the genre. Though there has been a decline with the recent consoles, a spare brawler rises out of the ashes of nostalgia and captures my heart all over again. The following games aren’t in any sort of order. They’re all just games that are entirely worth your time.

Top Ten E3 2013 Announcements and Stories

E3 2013 LogoE3 2013 has come and gone. By many standards it was what we’d come to expect from the expo: new game announcements, news on all kinds of projects, and some exclusive trailers, demos, and videos. But just about everyone can agree that this year’s E3 went above and beyond the expectations of most in attendance. It wasn’t just about the games this year: it was about the consoles and how they affect the gamers. It was about a change in the way we game and how our hobby will change moving forward. It was about publishers making games that gamers wanted to play. And above all, it was about glorifying our hobby and giving us an undeniable outlet to look at and say without wavering that we’re proud to be gamers. These ten announcements are just the tip of the events that made E3 2013 so memorable, and what you should be most excited for. (more…)

Top Ten Dream E3 2013 Predictions

E3 LogoThe 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo is right around the corner, and what better way to get hyped up for the event than by speculating what the conference might have to offer? I did a list like this last year and came away with almost one correct prediction, so maybe this year will be more realistic (though I highly doubt it). Even so, getting just one of these to be true would be fantastic and would totally make my E3. One can hope… (more…)

The Problem with Pokemon: Ten Changes to Make For the Next Generation

The Pokemon series has a lot of tradition that has been seen in every game in the main series: you get one of three Pokemon at the beginning of the game, each of which is either a fire, grass, or water type; you battle through eight gym battles to collect badges; an evil organization is up to no good trying to harm everyone’s Pokemon; apparently you, a young child, are the only one who can somehow manage to collect and/or see every Pokemon in the land, even when capable adults can be found everywhere.

But you know what, that’s what made the game’s great. They were a blast to play because they were so fun and simple. I bring this up though to say that I am desperately craving something new from the franchise. I know Nintendo has to stick to some tradition with each game, but switching things up a bit can make a huge difference. I’m not even going to fault the game for having some ridiculous Pokemon either (I’m looking at you, Trubbish!). I’m sure it’s hard to come up with new species of tiny creatures after you’ve run through the hundreds they have so far.  Here’s some examples of things that will make the next Pokemon game amazing: (more…)

Top Ten E3 2012 Announcements

Now that E3 has come and gone, it’s time for just about every gaming journalists, websites, magazines, and anything covering the newest technology to rank the best of the best from this year’s convention. Seeing as only one of my previous predictions kind of came true, E3 was sort of straightforward and down to business. Still though, there’s plenty to be excited about this coming year, and these ten entries are more than enough to satiate even the hungriest of gamers.
