More of the Same, Albeit Cute, with Kirby Star Allies

I had a very important decision to make: I was going to spend an entire week back home in Indiana and needed something to do on the flight and in the evenings. My trusty 3DS hadn’t gotten any love since Miitopia a few months back, and the Switch was sitting there looking pretty with Breath of the Wild and Golf Story. But which one should I take with me? The 3DS just saw Detective Pikachu release, and the Switch had Kirby Star Allies. Novelty got the best of me and I undocked my Switch, downloaded Kirby Star Allies and did that thing people do in the Switch commercials: played my Switch miles away from my actual home. (Side note, that was a pretty cool feature). But enough about me, let’s talk about Kirby and pals.

There’s Something About RPG Arcade Sports Games

Every gamer has their preferred genres. First person shooters, open world sandboxes, RPGs, fighters… the list can go on and on. When you delve deeper into these genres you get more specific, like tactical strategy RPGs, team based shooters, and chicken wing dating simulator. For me, I’ve always liked my RPGs, but when I get more detailed in that liking, I tend to enjoy quirky RPGs like card-based RPGs or crossovers featuring other video games! These sub-genres of sub-genres don’t always get frequent releases, but when they do I try to jump on them as soon as possible. Another such category is the Sports RPG. Who knew combing my least favorite type of game with my favorite genre would turn out so well? (more…)

The Overwatch League is Somehow Working

Since it’s release in May of 2016, Blizzard’s team based shooter Overwatch has been absolutely dominating my game time. It’s a bit odd, considering I’ve only written about the game a couple times here, but I’ve been playing fairly consistently for almost two years now (only on PS4, currently around Player Level 300, and Competitive Season 8 SR 2500). Recently, Blizzard also started up the Overwatch League (OWL for short), which took the previously disjointed tournaments, teams, and players from around the world, and brought them in to one definitive league where the best could truly shine. The move to start an eSports league not unlike major league sports seems strange, even now that we’re a month in, but after my initial skepticism about OWL, I’m pleasantly surprised how fun the League has become!

An RPG Where You and Your Friends are the Stars!

The 3DS is home to a gigantic library of role playing games, with mega franchises like Final Fantasy  and Dragon Quest being ported left and right, as well as new IPs such as Bravely Default making an impact on the scene as well. But you know what those RPGs are all missing? You. Not you as in you playing them. I mean you as in “you”, the actual person “you”, in the game itself. Or rather, more specifically the Miss version of yourself. Thankfully, Miitopia is here to let you indulge in all your RPG creation dreams. That is, if your dreams have a decidedly Nintendo feel to them.

Who Knew Dating Fried Chicken Could Be So Fun?

Visual novels are surging lately in the video game world thanks in part to games like Virtue’s Last Reward, Danganronpa,  and the more recent Doki Doki Literature Club. These “games” are more interactive story than actual game, but that’s exactly what you’d expect from the genre’s name A branch of the visual novel genre are dating sims: games where your end goal is to find love with one of the characters in the story. Oftentimes these games have a unifying theme, such as Dream Daddy letting you make relationships with eligible men with children, while the more bizarre Hatoful Boyfriend has you befriending different types of… birds? In this strange sub-category of the sub-category of visual novel/dating sims exists Wingman DX. What is Wingman DX you ask?

It’s a dating sim where you court fried chicken wings. (more…)

Top Games of 2017: Honorable Mentions

The year of 2017 has come and gone and with it many excellent games. Over the past month, I’ve recapped six of the best games I played released in 2017. Going through the games of last year, some stood out as great, but not superb enough to warrant a top spot for the year. Also, last year I didn’t just play new games, but also ones released earlier. I didn’t find it appropriate to include these in a true Game of the Year post, but here are a few others video games that stood out to me in 2017. (more…)

As the year wraps up I wanted to look back at some of the games that shaped the past 12 months for me. While there were many games I played this year, only a select few stand out as truly awesome. This is one of them. (more…)
