This week saw a duo of decent Craigslist pickups. After the first set, I was pretty set on not spending any more money on Craigslist stuff, but then the following…
It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these! The reason behind that is two-fold: unfortunately I just haven’t found the time to write much, but worse I haven’t scrounged up any video games lately! Sure, there’s some here and there pickups like Persona 5 and Story of Seasons, but nothing noteworthy. Oh, and I did get a Nintendo Switch, which is the reason behind the multiple-piece Nintendo Retrospective. Moving forward, let’s hope I have more weeks like this, where I found a couple of great games and had a decent work to boot! (more…)
With 3D gaming fully ushered in, thanks in-part to the N64, Nintendo was ready to start upping their game with their new console. The Gamecube not only looked nicer than the fat N64, it had a much more powerful processor capable of putting more polygons on screen. Basically, the games could look prettier, something that’s been commonplace these past few years among video game console launches. But while the Nintendo 64 was innovative and had a deep library of classics, the Gamecube suffered from a smaller collection of titles and some backlash from longtime Nintendo fans. (more…)
While Sony was off doing their thing, Sega got kind of weird with their surplus of consoles, and other companies were making consoles we never speak of, Nintendo dropped their follow-up to the Super NES in 1996. Bringing full 3D graphics, a brand new controller complete with the first-of-its-kind analog stick right in the center, support for a brand new rumble feature, and a bevy of cliche 90s color options, the Nintendo 64 was by far the greatest video game console I had ever played. Everyone’s talking about their brand new Nintendo Switch, and here I am getting all excited for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Granted, I was able to secure a Switch too, but hot damn, a NEO GEO POCKET COLOR! I’ve seriously been yearning for one of these retro handhelds for years, and someone on Craigslist finally let one go for a wonderful price. I picked up games for the system despite not even owning it, but now I’ve finally had a chance to sit down and play what some consider the best (at the time) handheld console out there!
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System represented the pinnacle of video games in the early 90s. Seeing as we didn’t get a PlayStation until late in the decade, and I didn’t get my own PS1 (or PS2) for that matter until much later, the SNES was the console I spent the most time on growing up as a child.
And man, was it a great one. (more…)
What was meant to be the Wii U’s swan song (which it still kind of is, I guess) also happens to be the Nintendo Switch’s biggest reason to abandon the Wii U entirely and dive right in the the newest console. That’s just what I did when I secured my Switch last week, and I’ve been playing Breath of the Wild almost nonstop since. There are plenty of stellar reviews out there, and I read something like over 80% of Switch users also bought BotW, which is an astounding attachment rate, but is the hype behind the latest Zelda game warranted? (more…)
With the release of the Nintendo Switch, the video game world is abuzz with all things Nintendo. A new console means plenty of new games, and with Nintendo, each new console brings back memories of years and consoles past. What better way to celebrate the release of the Switch than by looking back on the consoles that shaped my childhood. In part one of this personal retrospective, we’ll be looking back at the very first Nintendo console, the legendary Nintendo Entertainment System, and how personally impacted my video gaming life. Nintendo has been cranking out Fire Emblem games fairly consistently over the past couple years, with last year seeing two games in the form of Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Conquest, and this year seeing Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia releasing in April. Beyond that we’re looking at a crossover Hyrule Warriors style with Koei Tecmo on the upcoming Nintendo Switch titled Fire Emblem Warriors, as well as a yet-unnamed console version coming on the Switch as well. Until those (hopefully) excellent games all release, we are given Fire Emblem: Heroes to toy around with on our mobile devices. Stripping away most of the expected content that makes a Fire Emblem game a Fire Emblem game, Heroes still manages to capture the essence of the series and bring it (for free, mind you) to the masses of iPhone and Android users. For those of you just starting the game, or for you FE mainstays looking to get an edge, here are some pro tips to make your teams successful on the battlefield! (more…)
Better late than never, right?
After a month offline thanks to an inconvenient WordPress issue, I’m finally able to get back on here and write! And what better way to make up for lost time than to look back on the year that was 2016! There are a few features on this blog that I’d call an annual event, and the top ten games of the prior year is definitely one of them. Unlike other blogs, especially the big sites out there, my list of games doesn’t consist of just games that released in 2016. Rather these are the top ten games I actually got around to playing the past year. Here are my top ten games of 2016! (more…)
