Last year I was content to leave all of the California Extreme related posts to my Tumblr, which focuses entirely on video arcades and memorabilia. Coincidentally you should check that out if you want to know more about arcade games! This year however, I’m going to grace you all with the retro-filled weekend that was California Extreme 2014. Plenty of great games were played, a lot of machines I otherwise wouldn’t have played in my life were dabbled with, and some games were completely beaten thanks to the wonderful Free Play setting. Wow, what an amazing week! It was my birthday on Thursday, and Laura picked up a few great titles for me to add to the collection. Not only that, she thought about the ones that we could play together and grabbed a few of those as well! My brother actually delivered a few games as well, both of which were very unexpected! Lastly, I checked out a GameStop I hadn’t been to in several months and found two awesome Wii games. I took a couple days off from work, so I was actually able to play some of these games as well. One of the game’s wasn’t as good as I was hoping, but I knew it wouldn’t be great to begin with, and the other really makes me want to play more.
Nintendo’s Mii characters have been around since the onset of the Wii console back in 2006. The super-deformed versions of you, your friends, or really anyone that you want to put into the game usually show up as characters to represent your profile when playing certain video games, or make cameo appearances in the background of some titles. Occasionally you’ll be able to play as your Mii (like in the recent Mario Kart games as well as the upcoming Super Smash Bros.), but they’re usually just added on as a fun diversion from the main protagonists. Tomodachi Life puts your Mii characters into the leading role, as you get to witness and interact with their daily happenings. Who knew the Miis lived such insane lives! (more…)
You’ve been playing Mario Kart 8 for a few weeks now and have been having a great time. The 50cc races were a piece of cake, and the 100cc races weren’t too challenging, but the 150cc trails were tough. Harder yet, securing top honors while playing online seems near impossible with some players clocking in nearly 30 seconds ahead of you! I know; I’ve been there. Without a doubt I’m still there, but I have been steadily getting better with each passing day. Practice most definitely makes perfect, even in the world of Mario Kart 8, but there are some bonus tips you can use to better your odds of winning in every scenario. (more…)
There’s a local place that sells used video games that I’ve mentioned before on the blog. The store owner picked up shop and moved to a bigger (better?) location, but still within reasonable driving distance to our place. I ventured there this week to see how his new digs were doing. To find the directions however, I had to look up his Facebook page. When I was there I noticed a link to another, much further away, used game shop that will be closing down later this month. I had a day off and I was in a video game buying mood, so I decided to check out both places. Though the drive was long and the selection wasn’t as wondrous as I hoped, there were plenty of great finds! (more…)
At this year’s Fanime Convention in San Jose, California, a few friends of mine decided we needed to take our liking of the Animal Crossing: Sweet Day game in Nintendo Land for Wii U to the next level. (more…)
The 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo has officially come and gone, and left in it’s wake are mountains of exciting games to play, systems that look a hell of a lot better, and gamers who are proud to pronounce their hobby to any and all. Last year’s show was filled with announcements about the next generation consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, so this year it was expected that Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo would put out plenty of new software to go with that shiny new hardware. These ten moments were the defining times of E3 2014, and the games I am most excited to play. (more…)
If you frequent Target stores, specifically the electronics section of Target stores, you may have come across one of these special pre-paid Nintendo Points cards.
They look like this
They’re $10 Nintendo eShop cards that also come with a small bonus: an AR card that can be used with the Photos With Mario app. (more…)
