When referencing the greatest beat ‘em ups of all time, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game inevitably shows up on the list. Whether it’s the excellent Arcade Game or Turtles in Time, chances are Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael make the cut.—so it makes sense people get excited when a new TMNT-themed brawler is announced. Based on the Nickelodeon animated series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is the newest game to feature the heroes—and while die hard Turtle fanatics will love the adherence to the source material, sloppy controls, glitches, and many minor nuisances keep the game from being as memorable an experience as the earlier games. I had to work at a different location this past week and it was in a large complex that also happened to contain a rather large GameStop. If you recall last week’s Sunday Roundup you’ll remember that a few sales were happening at the chain, namely a Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal and a 3 for $10 sale. Seeing as Monday was a holiday most of those deals were extended through Labor Day, so I took advantage once again! Honestly through, these were extremely good finds that I may have just bought for the hell of it without any sale. And I must say, my Wii collection has been steadily growing the past months and it’s starting to get filled with some quality titles! Go watch my Game Hunter video on the Wii to learn why that’s been happening. (more…)
The Nintendo 3DS has a basket full of features: it can display stereoscopic 3D images without the use of glasses, the system is capable of handling software that is visually comparable to the Wii, and it fits in your pocket. Perhaps the most underused (?) but most awesome features the system has is StreetPass. Tagging someone with the system’s detection ability and then playing a game with that person’s Mii character has always been fun, and getting bonus content in select 3DS games is even cooler. But with the addition of four brand new downloadable StreetPass games to play, Nintendo has made carrying your handheld with you even more exciting! Not all the bonus games are incredibly fun, but there’s enough content and enjoyment to be had to easily warrant a purchase. (more…)
WayForward's remake of Capcom's classic NES platformer manages to retain the magic that made Ducktales memorable as well as infuse plenty of new material to entice all newcomers. Here is…
Episode 24 of the Recurring Bosscast marks the one year anniversary of the show! Man, I really can't believe it's already been a solid year of recording with Mat and…
Something must have been burning a hole in my pocket because I spent quite a few dollars on games this week. I say something because it’s not like I was sitting on a pile of money that I could spend willy nilly on whatever I wanted. At least I can take solace in knowing that I bought these games on sale and saved a few bucks that way. Yeah, we’ll go with that…
Riding on the coattails of Scrooge McDuck and the HD remake of the NES classic DuckTales, I’ve been reminiscing about a lot of games from my childhood. And while yesteryear is strangely something I think about far more than a normal person should, this time I was beginning to wonder what some of my other favorite titles growing up would look like in glorious high definition. Though it’s strictly speculation and quite literally most of these will never be possible, it was fun to think of what could be. What should be, perhaps? But nonetheless, here are the top ten games that need HD remakes! (more…)
I had to sit out this week of the Recurring Bosscast due to some crazy scheduling conflicts, but the show must go on! Mat and Jett talk about sleeper hits…
Brawlers, beat-em ups, side-scrollers (to an extent), and just plain arcade. Whatever you label the genre one thing is for sure: there are a ton of them out there!
Since I started playing video games on the NES there have been side-scrolling beat-em ups. My beginnings were with the Double Dragon series on the NES, which then evolved into the Genesis classics Golden Axe I and II. The love affair took off from there, with every generation producing unique and worthwhile entries in the genre. Though there has been a decline with the recent consoles, a spare brawler rises out of the ashes of nostalgia and captures my heart all over again. The following games aren’t in any sort of order. They’re all just games that are entirely worth your time.
