Review: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate

Castlevania Mirror of Fate CoverThe Castlevania series has enjoyed years of success on handheld systems. The previous three games in the series on the DS were arguably some of the best in the entire series. However, a reboot of the franchise occurred on the consoles in 2010 with the release of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The new game retained the gothic setting and whip-based action, but replaced much of the mythos with a fresh take on the story and took a more hack-n-slash, God of War-like approach. While this may have reinvigorated the franchise on the consoles, it has absolutely no place on the handhelds. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate is a victim of itself, trying to blend the new style of Lords of Shadow with the “Metroidvania” gameplay the DS and GBA games have perfected, but instead falls short in almost every category. Review: Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan

Etrian Odyssey IV CoverI recently had the opportunity to review a game very similar to Etrian Odyssey IV on the 3DS, Unchained Blades, itself a port from the PSP. I reference this past review because Etrian Odyssey IV does everything right that Unchained Blades did wrong. This fourth installment in the Atlus dungeon crawling RPG series is the best entry the entire genre has seen in a long time, and if we’re lucky it will start a steady influx of quality titles.

Review: Capcom Arcade Cabinet

Capcom Arcade Cabinet ArtCapcom is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Thirty years of video games from one of the world’s most well known game developers. In those three decades we’ve seen bona fide classics including Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and that’s only naming a few. What better way to honor Capcom’s storied history than by reliving some of the Japanese company’s earliest arcade titles? Capcom Arcade Cabinet is no mere collection of retro arcade games, but rather a platform to rekindle the feeling of being in an arcade in the 80s as well as open up these classic games for a new generation to enjoy. Review: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed CarIt seems even Sonic the Hedgehog, the “fastest thing alive,” enjoys getting behind the wheel from time to time. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is Sonic and company’s second racing outing after 2010’s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. The majority of the game is similar to the first: you can play as Sonic and many other familiar Sega faces as you race around tracks based on popular Sega franchises. In short it’s another case of “whatever Mario can do, Sonic can do better” from Sega. But Mario Kart this is not. (more…)

Gaming News: 3/9/13

Professor Layton MangaJet called it in a tweet last week: I think we doomed SimCity.

After the game was released it was plagued with issues concerning connectivity, gameplay performance, and more. After talking highly of the series and it’s future on the last Bosscast I am more than upset the game has stumbled right out of the gate.

In other news, there are some games on sale you can swipe if you’re fast. And apparently there’s a Professor Layton manga I can must spend all of my money importing. (more…)

Worth Playing vol. 5: The Remake Rendition

Ken HD ComparisonThe remake.
It’s been around for years and it has become more common for a developer or publisher to remake or re-release their titles for a new generation to play and enjoy. Many of these games are vanilla ports of their original versions but there are a few that I can say are better than their originals. Needless to say these games are worth your time and will leave you feeling both excited and nostalgic.

The Recurring Bosscast: 010 – Doing Crossword Puzzles

Episode 010 LogoDamn, 10 episodes already! I honestly can’t believe it’s been that many.

Anyway the Bosscast topic of the week is all things SimCity! Mat, Jett, and I dive deep into the back catalog of Sim games, retelling our stories of developing towns, destroying them by Godzilla, and listening to some epic chiptunes.

Also this week Jett and I were lame but Mat played some excellent new titles, including Crysis 3 and Saints Row: The Third.

Also, subscribe to us on iTunes!
