Review: Retro City Rampage

What started out as a side project has turned into one of the biggest trips down memory lane for anyone who grew up in the 80s or 90s. Retro City Rampage pays homage to countless movies, TV shows, and video games from decades past, all wrapped up in an 8-bit package. The nostalgic setting and pop culture humor though make Retro City Rampage a game for a specific type of player.

Sunday Roundup: 10/14/12

I have a small confession to make: this is a culmination of two weeks worth of games. I was unable to get my Sunday Roundup done last week on time, and as you’ll see I had plenty of games to put together a solid week’s worth of titles for you all. But one thing lead to another and I wasn’t able to publish my weekly article. But fear not! The Sunday Roundup has not gone away, and it is back, better than ever. Or at least it’s back. Being better is totally subjective.

Gaming News: 10/13/12

Darkstalkers is coming back. Even if it is in a re-release, at least it’s something for fans to hold on to!

Also this week, there were ups and downs for Borderlands 2 players, including an early release of some DLC, a bug that erased some players game data, and then an announcement for even newer DLC next week!

And if you frequented SlickGaming this past week and enjoyed my Pokemon posts, then you’ll be entertained by a unique parody game by PETA concerning the ethical treatment of Pokemon animals. (more…)

Now Playing: Retro City Rampage & Professor Layton and the Last Specter

Two new games that couldn’t be any different. The violent homage to every iconic game imaginable and the return of my favorite gaming duo all in one week! Trying to partition time between the two games is proving quite the daunting task, but don’t feel pity for me. In fact, you should feel the opposite, because each game is great in their respective right. If you don’t believe me, then you should probably keep reading and let me change your mind. (more…)

The Problem with Pokemon: Ten Changes to Make For the Next Generation

The Pokemon series has a lot of tradition that has been seen in every game in the main series: you get one of three Pokemon at the beginning of the game, each of which is either a fire, grass, or water type; you battle through eight gym battles to collect badges; an evil organization is up to no good trying to harm everyone’s Pokemon; apparently you, a young child, are the only one who can somehow manage to collect and/or see every Pokemon in the land, even when capable adults can be found everywhere.

But you know what, that’s what made the game’s great. They were a blast to play because they were so fun and simple. I bring this up though to say that I am desperately craving something new from the franchise. I know Nintendo has to stick to some tradition with each game, but switching things up a bit can make a huge difference. I’m not even going to fault the game for having some ridiculous Pokemon either (I’m looking at you, Trubbish!). I’m sure it’s hard to come up with new species of tiny creatures after you’ve run through the hundreds they have so far.  Here’s some examples of things that will make the next Pokemon game amazing: (more…)

Gaming News Snippets: 10/6/12

If you weren’t already sold on Assassin’s Creed III, perhaps some DLC involving a corrupt George Washington will sway your perceptions.

Or maybe if you’re more of a casual gamer, the possibility of a Star Wars themed Angry Birds game will whet your appetite.

No? Nothing? Well heck, then I don’t know what will please you!

Now Playing: Borderlands 2

Can you believe it’s been three years since the original Borderlands surprised us all with its addictive, loot-driven kill-fests? Three years since we opened the Vault, killed our first Badass Psycho, picked up our first corrosive pistol. For me at least the time doesn’t seem so long ago because I’ve been playing Borderlands and its DLC periodically ever since 2009. And how we’re here in 2012, with Borderlands 2 and all its glory. I’ve been playing daily since the game came out last week, and here’s what you need to know about the game so far.

Sunday Roundup: 9/23/12

A short list of games but games that are amazing nonetheless. I have been busy this week and am currently still out of town on a vacation of sorts, but that didn’t stop me from picking up two new games this week. I need to clarify what “new” means though: One game is new in every sense of the word: it came out this week, I bought it, and it was wrapped in that plastic that is so satisfying to tear open. The other game, while also new in that it came out this week, is actually a collection of older titles and some other swag (if the picture hasn’t given it away yet). (more…)
