Recently I picked up Valkyria Chronicles Remastered for PS4 via the Humble Bundle. The tactical/strategy RPG from the PS3 era was always on my radar, and the positive reception the game garnered made me think, “Yeah, I’ll play that someday.” And then someday became hopefully this year. This year became this console. Then this console became an old console, and I never got around to it. This is the case all too frequently with me: I really want to play some game, but for one reason or another, they slip through the cracks. While there are tons of games I want to play, there are a few that I actually do want to play and never get around to them. Even better case in point: I’ve wanted to make a post such as this for awhile now, but never got around to it! So let’s discuss today in no particular order ten games I really wanted to play, but never actually have.
The year of 2017 will go down as one of the best in all of gaming. From the release of Nintendo’s Switch console to the abundant amount of triple A titles worth your time released this calendar year, it’s hard to find any other time it’s been this great to be a gamer. As the year wraps up I wanted to look back at some of the games that shaped the past 12 months for me. While there were many games I played this year, only a select few stand out as truly awesome. The past few weeks the gaming world has been discussing the hot topic of loot boxes. Designed to reward the player with random in-game content, loot boxes are the staple reward system for many games, including heavy hitters like League of Legends and Overwatch. While these games implement loot boxes to dole out cosmetic rewards, a couple upcoming games are set to give players game-changing content via loot boxes. This shift in intention has many calling foul for the entire practice of loot boxes. Let’s take a look at loot boxes, and what they’ve done for the gaming community. (more…)
As we get older and more and more games are released, we often look back at the titles that shaped our earlier years. The games that were there for us after school. The games that defined our generation. Or perhaps just the games which personally stood out. One such case of the latter, for me at least, is the second outing of Nintendo’s badass bounty hunter Samus Aran. On the Game Boy Metroid II: Return of Samus was one of my earliest gaming experiences. I didn’t own the game, but rather I borrowed it from my older brothers when they were done playing. It was gorgeous at the time, featuring a chilling soundtrack and just the right amount of action and exploration for my feeble mind to comprehend. Granted, I never beat the game because it was ridiculously confusing and hard (I’m only like, 6 in this scenario), but it still stuck with me.
Now we’re in 2017, some 25 years later, and Nintendo has re-released the game on the 3DS as Metroid: Return of Samus, complete with all new visuals, story elements, gameplay features, and all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a remake. Thankfully in that time I’ve also upgraded my intellect and gaming prowess, so I was actually able to beat it this time around. And man, what a journey it was. (more…)
A few years ago I wrote a list about games on past Christmas whislists that didn’t make any sense. Games that were either not for me, or ended up being kind of bad and in no way should they have been on a kids Christmas wishlist. I debated doing a companion piece on this focusing on games I had on my lists for several years. These were games that, for some reason, in the span of 365 days I never managed to pick up myself. One such game (and likely the one to take the top spot if there were enough to justify an entire list) would have been the final Castlevania on the DS, Order of Ecclesia. After actually getting the game for Christmas a year ago (finally!) I’ve sat down and played the first couple hours. So far it’s brutal, it’s challenging, it’s engaging, and it’s all the things I love about Castlevania! (more…)
I’ve spent a few weeks with the newest 3DS Fire Emblem and while I would still consider myself a newcomer to the series (having only played the previous two 3DS entries, Awakening and Fates: Birthright), I can still see some major differences with Shadows of Valentia. Fire Emblem fans who still haven’t taken the new game for a spin can rest assured it is a lot more of what you’d want, and arguably a better game than Fates in some instances, but some interesting mechanics and themes have come up that I was surprised to see. 2017’s Electronic Entertainment Expo kicks off this week, and gamers are hungry to hear the new releases coming to their favorite console. Every year brings new content to make your purchase more worthwhile, as well as the announcement of brand new IPs and followups to your favorite games and series. As with years past, before the show fully kicks off let’s make some predictions for what we’d love to see come out of this year’s show. (more…)
