Why Do We Collect Video Games?

Collecting video games has been a hobby of mine for over 15 years. Throughout those one and a half decades I found hundreds of excellent games at stellar prices, picked up a whole bunch of random games no one has even heard of, and completed series after series across many consoles and generations. Unfortunately I never really ran into any other serious collectors to discuss rare games with, go on “hunts” together, or generally do game collect-y things with. Recently I did start following the video game collecting subreddit, and from there I’ve started to realize the vast difference between myself and what I can only consider to be the current norm for game collectors. Proof that just because a game is hard to come by, it doesn't mean it's wholly worthwhile. After several years of tracking this game down... it was completed in just…

What Exactly is Going on in No Man’s Sky?

It’s been over a week since the highly anticipated No Man’s Sky has released on PlayStation 4, and while the excitement around the game is still high, folks are coming down from that mountain and wondering, well, whether or not the hype was worth it. No doubt the game is ambitious, and without question the game will sell well, but how much of a game is actually there? And what good is a game if it’s not fun to play? I’ve spent several hours with No Man’s Sky and while the game isn’t exactly the space romp I was expecting it to be, it’s still got me intrigued for what could come.

Sunday Roundup: 8/7/16

A few trips to GameStop were sadly uneventful, but a return to my friendly ol’ Sunnyvale store proved to be worthwhile yet again! I do find it weird that whenever there’s a “4 for $40” or “4 for $20” sale, or something similar, I can always find three games I want really quickly, and then have trouble finding a fourth. I usually end up getting trash, which is the case yet again this week. Also, and more excitingly, I went back to the De Anza flea market this weekend! There was tons more booths with video games! I was incredibly impressed by their selection, quality, and, most of all, price! The best find was some Skylanders toys, which I’ll get into at the end here.

What Will the Future of Pokemon Go Look Like?

Pokemon Go is nothing short of a phenomenon. It has broken download records for iTunes, caused countless news stations to cover it during primetime hours, and even has folks *gasp* getting up and moving around to play it! If you’re one of the millions who have been playing the game, then you know the frustrations that come with it, not the least of which being poor server connections causing you to not even be able to play the game. But Niantic, the company behind the game, must be doing something right, because despite all this countless players, myself included, still connect to the game every day to see which little pocket monsters are showing up in the real world now. But just like any video game, especially one in the mobile marketplace, the drop off for players can occur instantly unless we’re given consistent, new content to keep us motivated. So what does the future of Pokemon Go even look like? Let’s speculate! (more…)

Rogue Legacy is the Best Kind of Dungeon Crawl

Some games choose to give you big advantages for completing a certain level or stage. Take for example the Legend of Zelda series: completing a dungeon will net you some extra health and a specific weapon or tool to assist in further exploration of the rest of the game’s world. Other titles give you small rewards throughout, like an RPG giving you additional HP and strength with every level you go up. Then there are dungeon crawlers like Castlevania which combine these two, giving you bigger and better weapons all the time, but not allotting anything major until you overcome a boss. Take that classic Castlevania: Symphony of the Night formula, and mix in the random dungeon generation of rogue-like games such as The Binding of Isaac, and mix in some Final Fantasy for flair, and you’ve got yourself Rogue Legacy, a remarkably fun and replayable title from 2014.
