Yearly Roundup: 2012

Another year draws to a close and 2013 is right in front of us. What better way to look back on the year that was 2012 than reliving each and every game purchase of the year! You may recall last year I did something very similar at the end of the year, but this time around it’s a bit more special. 2012 was Slick Gaming’s first full calendar year being a live blog (a feat I still can’t grasp entirely). That means a lot of things, like more posts and features than before, but it also means an entire year’s worth of new games chronicled in the Sunday Roundup feature. Sunday Roundup: 12/30/12

Here it is. The final Sunday Roundup of the year.

And what a year it’s been. dozens of great games came out in 2012 (with some included in this week’s Roundup!), and even more stellar games came my way this year as well.

Splitkick’s 2012 Game of the Year Picks

It’s the end of 2012 and that means two things: the holiday season is in full swing, and every gaming outlet is pumping out Game of the Year awards and nominations. I have recently been given the fantastic opportunity to work for Splitkick as one of their podcast co-hosts. I was asked by the staff as well to contribute my choices for 2012’s Game of the Year. This year was actually the first time I selected my Game of the Year, and it was actually a pretty tough choice!

A quick trip into Disc Replay and twenty bucks later I am the owner of six new video games.

Sometimes it’s just as simple as that. Like most other instances when I shop for games, I really only wanted two or three of these, but the allure of paying $10 more and getting three more games is just too good to pass up. (more…)

Review: Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

When Baldur’s Gate first released on the PC back in 1998, BioWare had created one of the most beloved and recognizable games to bear the Dungeons & Dragons license, as well as one of the most finely crafted RPG experiences to date.

Fast forward nearly 14 years to the day and we are given Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, a reworked version of the game that hammers out a multitude of bugs found in the original release, as well as introduces brand new characters, storylines, and modes to play through. But for all the accolades it received in the late 90s, how well does the once mighty Baldur’s Gate stand up to RPG juggernauts like Dragon Age: Origins in today’s gaming world? (more…)

Gaming News: 12/8/12 (The VGAs Edition)

Spike’s annual Video Game Awards were held Friday evening. Showcasing the best the gaming world had to offer in the last year, the VGAs have attempted to become the Emmy’s/Oscar’s/Grammy’s of the video game world. All hate and fanboyism aside, the VGAs are likely the closest thing we as a gaming community have to a true, universally accepted awards show.

That being said, this years event was actually on the better side. Some great titles won awards, there were some truly surprising reveals and announcements, and Samuel L. Jackson is still a badass. (more…)
