Modern Classics: Picross 3D

The concept is simple: you’re given a row of cubes that seemingly form a simple shape. But etch away specific cubes and you start to reveal a hidden picture. That’s it. That’s the entire setup for Picross 3D, a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS released in 2010. With the perfect blend of easy and difficult, fun and challenging, and simply addictive nature, Picross 3D is one of the best puzzle games on the DS, and one of the best puzzle games to come out this side of Tetris.

Review: Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse

Family Guy Back to the Multiverse CoverRemember that one episode of Family Guy where Stewie and Brian go to a whole bunch of different universes where one distinct detail is different, like if the show were animated like a Disney cartoon, or if dogs had humans as pets? Activision sure hopes you do, because there’s an entire game surrounding that concept. Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse captures the highs and lows of the TV series it’s based on, as well as all the negative connotations one usually associates with a video game based on a show.  Uninspired gameplay, recycled jokes, and incredibly offensive humor ensure the stereotype persists.

A Fond Farewell to Nintendo Power

Nintendo Power Final Issue CoverIt is with a lump in my throat and a sad heart that I have to create this article. Nintendo Power, the gaming magazine beloved by generations of Nintendo fans and video game lovers alike, has come to an end. After 22 years, 285 issues, every Nintendo console to date, and thousands upon thousands of games, the magazine has bowed out of the printed market and the online market entirely, and will be fondly remembered in countless gamers’ hearts for many reasons. I only felt it necessary that I pay my respects to the periodical that I took so much from. Let’s go on a journey through time and enjoy the spectacle, wonder, excitement, and love of all things Nintendo that was Nintendo Power. (more…)

Gaming News: 12/1/12

Wii Mini ConsoleThe sales are over, Cyber week is wrapping up, and we can get back to the standard Gaming News formula. And by that I mean news about games that are coming out, updates to games, and important snippets you should know about. Not just those silly sales like an Xbox 36o with three games for $250. No one would care to buy that. Oh wait.. apparently hundreds of thousands of people did.

Also on topic is the Wii U! Jett has picked up his new system and gushes over it’s awesomeness and making me want one desperately in the process. Also we chat it up over Zero Escape, The “Magic Price”, and console loyalty!

Review: Adventure Time: Hey Ice King? Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!!

It’s clear that Adventure Time: Hey Ice King? Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!! has one of the greatest subtitles of all time, but what isn’t clear is why it took the series so long to stretch Jake’s extendable legs to the world of video games. Colorful landscapes, quirky characters, and inspiration lifted from video games seem to make the Cartoon Network series a shoe-in for a successful video game transition. Paying homage to classic video games and retaining nearly everything that makes the series equal parts entertaining and ridiculous, Adventure Time: Hey Ice King is a game fans of the series will enjoy, even if it only lasts a few hours. . Even so, I ask thee this: What time is it?

Sunday Roundup: 11/25/12

Miss a few weeks of the Sunday Roundup and I’ve got to get back in a big way I suppose. I knew there were some great game deals out there for Black Friday at big retailers like Best Buy, Amazon.com, and Wal-Mart, but in the confusion and craziness that is the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, I completely looked past a local store that just so happens to sell video games from decades past. And did I luck out by checking their sales as well. Let’s just say that 20% off and buy 1 get 1 sales make me a happy collector!

Gaming News: 11/24/12

What happened last week? Something big… something noteworthy…

Something. Ugh, I can’t think of it.

Oh yeah! The Wii U was released, and that’s pretty much what every news piece concerning games related to this week. Still though, some stories sneaked through the Wii U dominance and caught my eye as well this week. (more…)
