Gaming Tunes You’ve Gotta Hear

I’ve got an experiment for you. Try and find me any gamer that doesn’t have at least one strong memory about the soundtrack of a game. You can’t do it. As endearing as the story in many a Final Fantasy, or the excellent gameplay of titles like Uncharted 2 and Super Mario Bros. 3, music in games has left an undeniable impact on gamers. Whether it’s the blips and bleeps of the Atari 2600, the MIDI music from the SNES, or the fully orchestrated masterpieces heard in the current generation of consoles, music has played an ever important role in shaping a video game. I want to take this time to share some of my personal favorites from my gaming past. I highly encourage you to sit back, pump up the volume, and bask in the warmth that a finely tuned gaming song can give you.

Review: Yesterday

Can you tell me everything you did yesterday? And I do mean everything: did you eat two slices of pizza for dinner or three? Did you wear a blue shirt or a white shirt? Did you jump off a silo and crash through the window of a building?

Yesterday is a point-and-click adventure game that’s full of mystery, murder, and one man’s resolve to find out who he really is. It’s not too often you see this style of game nowadays, but Yesterday does give players a unique experience, even if it’s one that’s far too short.

Now Playing: Pushmo

It’s a rare time for me: there isn’t anything coming out in the foreseeable future that I actually want to play. So what does that mean? Downloading games I wanted to get long ago (and if I’m lucky, sifting through the backlog)! Pushmo is a 3DS exclusive puzzle game that has you pushing and pulling blocks as you hop your way to the goal. I’ve been able to spend some time with the game already, and I must say, as far as puzzle games go, this one has a lot going for it.

Video Review: The Unholy War

One of the best things about collecting video games is that you’re never short of an interesting title to play when you’re bored. Enter The Unholy War, a 3D fighting game for the PS1 from Toys For Bob, the same development team that made the out-of-left-field success that is Skylanders. The Unholy War has some interesting things going for it that make the game not like any other brawler, and you know what… it’s pretty damn fun.

Publishers & Metacritic: Who’s to Blame?

Recently it was made aware that Obsidian Entertainment, the company responsible for the excellent game Fallout: New Vegas, was not given any royalties or bonuses for the game because the game failed to garner a high enough score on aggregate review site Metacritic. Aside from this being a terrible story for the talented developers over at Obsidian, it is also a ludicrous practice for a publisher to utilize. There has been a bevy of articles and opinion pieces on the situation, with a lot of the argument aimed at Metacritic. But is Metacritic really to blame, or should the pointed finger of the outraged public be directed towards someone else?

Gameplay Vault: Mario Party 9

Mario Party 9 was a pretty fun game. I’ve missed out on most of the series, but I was happy to be able to play and review this one. To be honest though, much of the game is eerily similar to the first game in the series, and by that I mean it’s a heck of a lot of fun with friends! While playing with my girlfriend, I decided to record some gameplay. Here is the resulting montage of Mario madness. Enjoy!

Review: Mario Party 9

What a guy! Nintendo’s portly plumber has saved the Mushroom Kingdom dozens of times, rescued Princess Peach whenever she was in peril, and even let his brother share the limelight every once in awhile, and now he’s throwing yet another massive party for all to attend!

Mario Party 9 is the first game in the series to come out in over five years and mixes up the formula quite a bit, without sacrificing the core Mario Party feel. If you’re looking for a reason to turn on your Wii, this is the best excuse since Skyward Sword.

Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2

What’s that? Another tragedy has befallen Japan and demons are at the center of it all? Hmm, must be another Shin Megami Tensei game. Devil Survivor 2 is the follow-up to the RPG/strategy hybrid Devil Survivor (which saw a recent remake on the 3DS), and it has you once again controlling a group of young heroes as they unravel the mysteries surrounding the most recent trip Earth has taken to its ultimate destruction. I know it’s terrible that the world is in shambles, but if mass destruction is this much fun, count me in, baby!
