Sunday Roundup: 1/29/12

Another visit to Lafayette and another trip into Disc Replay. What that all boils down to is me finding new excuses to throw my money away. Personally it’s always a small victory every time I get to buy a new old game: I feel like I’m doing the game a personal favor by freeing it from the confines of the store rack. Also, there were some great deals at Best Buy this week: Lots of new game for just about every console were on clearance. And to make things better, I felt even more victorious this week since I wasn’t able to get any new titles the previous week! Huzzah!

A World of Games: Arcade Tokens and Tickets

It has been a hobby of mine for the last several years to collect arcade tokens and tickets. When ever I am out and happen to see an arcade, I try to stop in to first see what they have to offer, and second to see if they have any tickets or tokens to add to my collection. After more than 10 years of doing this, I was surprised both by the variety in coins/tickets I’ve found, and also the rise of the game card as arcade currency. I finally got around to photographing my collection and even created a Tumblr account to house all my pics. But I wanted to share with you all what I’ve got so far, and to open up your eyes to the strangely beautiful world of video arcade memorabilia.

Video Review: Tetris the Card Game

I recently got my hands on Tetris; The Card Game and was able to get a few good games in over the past two weeks. Though it’s not entirely like it’s video game counter-part, the card game is a fun spin-off of the main franchise. I’ve put together a short video going over the basics and what makes the game fun and cool. Enjoy!

Gameplay Vault: All Zombies Must Die!

Zombies have been all the rage lately, haven’t they? I don’t think I even need to go into detail about all the movies, games, and books they’ve been a part of. Because of this overflow of undead, it might be easy to pass by All Zombies Must Die! for the Xbox 360 (or perhaps you might mistakenly think it’s the similarly named Orcs Must Die!). Either way, I’ve been able to put some time into this action-RPG/dual-stick shooting hybrid, and I’ve been pleased with it thus far. I have some videos for you all to enjoy so you can get a feel for the zombies yourself.

Quick Hits: iPhone Gaming Madness

This past week (and as my phone currently told me today is still going on) EA had a massive sale on all their iPhone video games. Most games were $.99 and my girlfriend game me a $10 iTunes gift card, so picking up a few was an easy choice. I’ve played through a few and wanted to touch on each lightly, mayhaps to entice one of you to get one yourself.

Review: Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights

What sort of tomfoolery is this? A video game on a Nintendo handheld featuring a wise doctor and a young sidekick solving puzzles and unraveling a mystery that isn’t a Professor Layton title? Rubbish! A definite imitation of the sublime puzzle solving of the Professor Layton series, Konami’s Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights distinguishes itself with a variety of gameplay methods, unique visuals, and a handful of interesting puzzles. Is there room in this world for two top hat wearing puzzle solvers with British accents? No. No there is not.

Review: Sonic Generations (3DS)

How many times is Sonic the Hedgehog going to “come back?” I understand that people want him to return to form and be in a game akin to the original trilogy back on the Sega Genesis, but seriously! Every time he’s in a new title gamers bring the topic up. Perhaps out of sympathy for said gamers or sheer coincidence, Sonic Generations for the 3DS attempts to address these problems by allowing players to control two distinct Sonics from the series’ expansive library. Two Sonics also means twice the Tails, which strangely means four tails, which if you think about it… never mind, just keep reading.

Yearly Roundup: 2011

As 2011 comes to an end, I thought it would be a cool idea to look back at the year in games. Specifically, the year in games added to my ever-growing library. If you’re a frequent visitor to the site (I greatly hope you are!) you’ll no doubt know I do a weekly blog post about my newest games. So below I’ve collected every game I added this year (well, really only half-year, because I started this blog in late July). I’ve also linked any relevant posts I’ve done about said games, like reviews, Modern Classics, and gameplay videos. Enjoy the small retrospective, and here’s to another fantastic year in gaming in 2012!

Sunday Roundup: 12/25/11

Merry Christmas everyone!

Not really a tradition and more so my tastes don’t really change, every Christmas I usually receive a few video games from my family. This year was no exception, and I am eternally grateful and pleased that my loved ones get me any gifts, let alone games that I really want to play! Here’s what 2011 did for Jsick this Christmas.
